Italy: Visiting PostDoc Researchers at Università di Bologna

Overview

The Institute of Advanced Studies is pleased to announce the call for two early stage research fellowships for the year 2011.

Deadline for submitting applications: from 1 to 30 June 2010

The Institute of Advanced Studies of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna is pleased to announce a call for the following Early-Stage Research Fellowships:

A) Early-Stage Research Fellowship in the field of Humanities and Economics (1 full-year scholarship to be awarded)

B) Early-Stage Research Fellowship in the field of Sciences and Technology (1 full-year scholarship to be awarded)

Each Fellowship will be assigned to an early-career researcher in order to develop his/her research activities at a Department or Research Centre of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna.

Terms and conditions:

1.The candidate must hold an invitation from a permanent member of the Academic staff of the University of Bologna who will act as supervisor and will guarantee access to research facilities.

2.The ESR Fellowship will start between January 6, 2011 and January 20, 2011 and will end no later than December 31, 2011, for an overall duration of one year.

3.The ESR bursary amounts to € 15.600,00 before taxes (including fiscal charges of the University of Bologna) covering a period of 12 months. The grant will be paid by the Administration of the Institute of Advanced Studies in deferred bimonthly instalments. The ESR Fellowship must not be held simultaneously with any other grant or contract provided by the Italian Government or by other Public Administrations in Italy.


4.The Institute of Advanced Studies will provide accommodation in a mini-apartment equipped with bedroom, bathroom and cooking facilities (Residenza di Studi Superiori, Via Mario Fantin 15 - 40131 Bologna). ESRF winners carrying out their research projects in one of the regional locations of the University of Bologna without lodging in the RSS will be granted an extra contribution for accommodation expenses of €200 / month.

5.The ESR Fellowship is awarded after a selection process based on publications and other academic qualifications/achievements.

Candidates must:

- be citizens of countries other than Italy and not resident in Italy
- not be over 36 years of age at the date of the application deadline
- hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification fully granted by a University at the date of the application deadline.

6.Applications will be evaluated by the Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies. The advice of external referees may be sought.

Particular consideration will be given to the quality of the candidates, with special reference to:

- publication record
- academic degree and qualifications/achievements
- research proposal.

7.Applications should be sent by e-mail to the Director of the Institute (direzione.isa@unibo.it) and copied to the Administrative Secretary (segreteria.isa@unibo.it) and to the International Secretary (secretary.isa@unibo.it) between June 1-30 2010.

Candidates are required to use the application form.

In addition the application must include:

- a curriculum vitae
- a list of publications
- at least one letter of reference from a senior scientist acquainted with the candidate's curriculum vitae
- a letter of invitation and reference written by the candidate's proposed research project supervisor at the University of Bologna.

All documents should be sent as a single file (Word .doc, Word .docx or Rich Text Format .rtf).

8.The Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies will draft a shortlist of the candidates in order of merit, which will be published on the Institute's web site within August 31 2010.

9.The ESR Fellowships will be awarded by the Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies in accordance with the order of merit.

10.The successful candidate must officially accept the Fellowship within 7 days of the date of publication of the order of merit on the Institute website. Within the Fellowship starting date he/she must submit to the ISA Administration official certification of academic qualifications, together with a letter of formal acceptance of the Fellowship. The statement should include a formal acceptance of the fellowship conditions as described above. False declarations will lead to exclusion from the Fellowship and the Fellow will be liable to prosecution according to Italian law.

11.As required by local authorities, the Institute of Advanced Studies and the University of Bologna will undertake to provide letters of invitation addressed to the Italian Consulate of the candidate's Country of residence in order to obtain a visa and, upon arrival in Bologna, a residence permit for study purposes for the duration of the fellowship, issued by the local Police Authorities.

12.ESR Fellows are expected to carry out research activities according to the research project plan presented in the application and in association with the University Department or Research Centre mentioned in the application.

13.Failure to comply with the above requirements, or commission of serious disciplinary or criminal offences, will lead to the Fellowship being revoked.

14.If the successful candidate is unable to take up the ESR Fellowship, the fellowship will be offered to the other candidates following the order of merit in the shortlist.

15.The ESR Fellowship does not entitle the holder to social security coverage. ESR Fellows are required to subscribe to appropriate accident, medical and liability insurance, as established by University regulations. The fellowship is not an employment contract and its only purpose is to foster the Fellow's intellectual and scientific development. The tax regime applicable to the Fellowship is that defined by Italian law.

16.In the case of assignment of the Fellowship to non-EU citizens, the Fellow's supervisor and the staff of the Department of the University of Bologna, where the ESR Fellow will perform his/her activities, will be called on to comply with all the procedures required by the Bologna Police Authorities in order to provide him/her with a sojourn permit in Italy.

17.ESR Fellows are required to deliver a lecture concerning their research activities and to provide an intermediate brief report (by July 15) and a final brief report (by December 31) on the research they have undertaken, which must be signed by the supervisor. This report must be forwarded to the Director of the Institute and in copy to the International Secretary. The ESR Fellow is expected to acknowledge the support received from the Institute of Advanced Studies in research papers and other publications produced during their research at the University of Bologna.

18.The present announcement will be posted to the Albo Ufficiale dell’Ateneo di Bologna (Via Zamboni 33), from the June 1 2010 to the end of the selection process. This publication will have a legal publicity value.
