Switzerland: PhD Student in Exposure Science / Human exposure modeling

Overview

We seek a highly motivated PhD student for a challenging research project financed by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, FOPH. The aim of the project is to assess human exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) contained in consumer products. Endocrine disruptors act at very low doses on the human reproductive system and presumably on the brain. As phthalates they are present in many plastics, as UV-filters used in sunscreens, and as pesticides for plant protection they end up in food. Male fertility at the same time is shown to decline during the last decades, not only in humans, but also in many animal species. Together with collaborators from FOPH, EMPA Dübendorf and Fondation Faber in this project we want to model consumer exposure to important EDC and link the exposure to observed negative effects on male fertility. The work will consist of assessing and combining experimental data from various sources and use statistical analysis to find correlations between exposure and effect. The applicant will closely collaborate with partner institutions in Switzerland and in the US.

Eligible candidates

The successful applicant will possess a degree in biology, pharmacy, chemistry, health or environmental sciences, or a related field of natural sciences with a first-class academic record. The applicant should have interests in computer modeling and statistics. Ideally the work will commence in September 2010. For more detailed information please contact Dr. Natalie von Goetz (Phone ++41-44-632 0975, email: Natalie.von.goetz@chem.ethz.ch, no applications under this e-mail please).

The Safety & Environmental Technology Group provides a stimulating multi-national work environment. The group is an internationally recognized leader in modeling consumer exposure to chemical pollutants, and is dedicated to developing tools that support sustainable chemistry. We have excellent computing facilities and collaborative links to world leading experimental fate and exposure groups. More information about the group and our research can be found at: http://www.sust-chem.ethz.ch/

How to apply

Please apply on-line or send a letter of application including Curriculum Vitae and references to Prof. Konrad Hungerbühler, ETH Hoenggerberg, Wolfgang-Pauli-Str. 10, 8093 Zurich, Switzerland (hungerb@chem.ethz.ch).
