The research will be undertaken under the joint supervision of Professor Peter Fleming, FREng, Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Control and Systems Engineering and other staff experts in the Department. Located within the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield, the UTC carries out cutting edge research activity into control and monitoring systems on behalf of Rolls-Royce plc.
Eligible candidates
The scheme is open only to student nationals from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world, as defined by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD. Research Areas
The studentships will be awarded to the most suitable candidates in three of the following areas related to control and monitoring of gas turbine engines:
Prognostic Health Monitoring - Skills include sound mathematical expertise, data-driven modelling, probabilistic modelling, Bayesian techniques and elicitation of expert knowledge.
Systems Approach to Controller/Sensor Selection - Skills: systems engineering expertise, industrial experience, appreciation of hardware issues, estimation and synthesis methods.
Wireless Real-Time Control - Skills: wireless communication systems, real-time systems and control system design.
Control System Architecture Design - Skills: multiobjective optimisation including visualisation methods, modelling and handling of imprecise data, elicitation of expert knowledge.
How to apply
We are seeking researchers who are capable of working in a multidisciplinary environment and who have strong backgrounds in at least one of the following areas:- systems, control, aerospace, mechanical, electronics and electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or related disciplines.
Applications must include a CV containing the names and addresses of two referees. You are also encouraged to provide evidence of good written and oral communication skills.
