UK: 4 PhD-scholarships Institute for Society and Globalization, Roskilde University

Overview

The Institute for Society and Globalisation (ISG) specialises in interdisciplinary research and teaching in the social sciences. Roskilde University is a leading Danish university emphasising interdisciplinary research, project-based learning, and socially-relevant engagement. The Doctoral School of the ISG announces PhD scholarships for employment from the 1st September 2010 or soon after in the following research themes:

1. The Challenge of Globalisation in Western Europe.

How do the increasing social, economic and/or political aspects of globalisation challenge the established ways of life in Western Europe, and what political strategies are at play in trying to deal with these challenges? Research projects that study the Danish situation in the European Union are particularly welcome.

For further information please contact: Professor Ian Manners, +45 (0)4674 2778 or manners@ruc.dk

2. Collaborative Innovation in the Public Sector with a Specific Focus on Health Care.

To what extent and how can collaboration between all relevant stakeholders (politicians, public administrators, professionals, users of public services and private firms and NGOs increase the innovation capacity in the public sector and more specifically in health care?

For further information please contact: Professor Eva Sørensen, +45 (0)4674 2486 or eva@ruc.dk

3. European Union Foreign Policy in an era of globalisation.

European Union (EU) foreign policy increasingly involves issues of multipolarity, multilateralism, and global governance in an era of globalisation. EU foreign policy in the era of globalisation is clearly shaped by traditional security and economic concerns, but what role for the considerable EU emphasis on normative issues such as democracy and human rights, social solidarity and sustainable development? Research projects which incorporate normative issues, as well as demonstrating a familiarity with advanced international social and political theory, are very welcome.

For further information please contact: Professor Ian Manners, +45 (0)4674 2778 or manners@ruc.dk

4. The Migration Industry and Markets for Managing Migration.

This PhD-scholarship places current migration debates within the conceptualisation of "Migration Industry" and "Markets for Managing Migration". The role of the migration industry and other market forces are not broadly recognized or examined in analyses of the causes, costs and consequences of international migration. The project proposal should address this gap in migration studies, e.g. by problematising the strict conceptual splits imposed by disciplinary and empirical research boundaries focusing either on the migrants and social networks, or on state policies and responses.

This PhD- scholarship is co-funded by the Migration Unit at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and the ISG at Roskilde University. The PhD student will spend equal time at both institutions.

For further information please contact:

DIIS - Senior Researcher Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, +45 (0)3269 8961, nns@diis.dk
ISG - Professor Ian Manners, +45 (0)4674 2778 or manners@ruc.dk

Please note: the first three themes are for so-called mobility scholarships. Therefore only non-Roskilde University graduates can apply.

Deadline for application 25. June 2010
