PhD Scholarship at University College London (UCL) and Loughborough University (LU)

Overview

The UK Doctoral Training Centre in Energy Demand Reduction is a collaboration between two of the leading energy research Universities in the UK: University College London (UCL) and Loughborough University (LU). Both have invested heavily in energy research. They lead some of the most important energy demand research initiatives in the UK. The Centre is the UK champion for postgraduate training to reduce CO2 emissions from the built environment, to secure our energy supply and to provide healthier more affordable buildings. Led by world-class academics assisted by industry partners and stakeholders the Centre provides a route to employment in the rapidly expanding field of energy demand management.

The Centre wishes to recruit up to eight top graduates from engineering, science and related disciplines who are committed to the area of energy demand research.

The Centre will provide you with the best broadly based and multi-disciplinary, but demanding, training for a research career that the UK can offer in this field. The four year programme consists of a 1 year Master of Research (MRes) with some modules taught across both Universities, followed by a Doctorate (PhD).

The MRes in Energy Demand Studies will provide you with a solid grounding in thermodynamics, energy systems in the built environment, energy modelling and analysis, social science methodologies, energy law and policy, and energy economics. The PhD research topics at the centre cover the broad themes of Climate change - impacts and adaptation; Systems - energy dynamics, building stocks, policy, demographics; Technologies - processes and products and People - society, behaviour and attitudes.

You will be trained to think critically and expected to develop first rate communication skills, management capability and business awareness. You may participate in summer schools, seminars, placements, recruitment open days, an annual colloquium and field work. At its peak the Centre expects to have around 70 students forming a vibrant, cross-campus community.

Places are available at both UCL and LU but applications from students willing to study at either institution will be favoured. The Centre offers both UK/EU fees and an enhanced stipend to eligible students but accepts applications from those who have their own funding.

Join us in this new and exciting initiative and help make a difference!
