PhD candidate in Social Psychology, University of Amsterdam

Overview

We offer a dynamic and supportive environment, in an internationally recognized department that ranks among the best in the Netherlands for research and teaching. The department is situated near the centre of town, and has excellent facilities for undertaking research in a broad range of areas (with state-of-the-art facilities available, such as eye-tracking, EEG, ERP and fMRI, cognitive behavioural testing suites, social observation lab).

Tasks

The PhD candidate will be hired as part of a larger research project on radicalization processes, entitled ‘Scientific Approach to Fighting Radical Extremism' (SAFIRE), sponsored by the European Union. It aims at a better understanding of the rationale and the drivers underlying the radicalisation processes. The PhD project is concerned with designing and testing the effectiveness of an intervention study among Muslims in Amsterdam. In addition, the task is to design and run experimental studies on determinants and consequences of humiliation in intergroup contexts. In addition, there will be the usual activities of a Dutch PhD student, such as writing international research papers and a PhD thesis (in English). The candidate is also required to complete a number of high-level courses at the graduate school. The PhD candidate will have a minor teaching load, consisting mainly of small scale undergraduate teaching, and individual supervision of students.

Requirements

A major in Social Psychology or a closely related field. The ideal candidate is a (social) psychologist with strong research interests in intergroup relations. We expect excellent writing skills and some expertise with respect to advanced statistical analysis. Some skills with respect to programming experiments (e.g. in Authorware, Medialab, Inquisit) is useful. Because most participants taking part in the research will not speak English, a good command of the Dutch language is a prerequisite.
