Scholarships/Grants at the Center for Iraq Studies (CIS), Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg

Overview

In the interest of promoting scholarly research on the economy of Iraq and in alignment with the goals of the Baghdad-Erbil-Erlangen Project (BEEP), the Center for Iraq Studies (CIS) is able to provide scholarships and grants for one post-doctoral scholar, one doctoral student and two master students from Germany. The Center scholarships and grants include a fully equipped office room at the CIS and full access to Erlangen-Nuremberg libraries and many other University facilities.

a) The post-doctoral scholar is expected to be involved in a clearly defined research project on the Iraqi economy, and to be in residence in the Erbil area during the period of affiliation, which normally runs from September 1st to July 31st each year. At the end of the scholarship, he is expected to deliver a report to the director of CIS that details the work that was accomplished during the scholarship.

Eligible applicants ordinarily have a PhD in economics and must be ready to participate in some teaching activity as well as to attend seminars and colloquia at the University of Salahaddin.

Scholarships are provided on a competitive basis for a period of at least six months and up to one year. Post-doctoral scholars carry out their own work in association with sponsors from the Nuremberg School of Economics and Business Administration or Erlangen Institute of Economics as well as from the University of Salahaddin.


b) Doctoral students in economics or related social sciences departments of German universities who are working or planning to work on a dissertation project on Iraqi economy or economic policy in Iraq and would like to pursue a part of this dissertation research at a University in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, preferably at the University of Salahaddin in Erbil, may apply for a doctoral student grant of the Center for Iraq Studies (CIS).

Eligible applicants ordinarily have a Master in economics and must be ready to participate in some teaching activity as well as to attend seminars and colloquia at the Iraqi host university. They will be in residence in the area of the host university during the period of the scholarship, which normally runs from September 1st to July 31st each year.

Applicants are expected to be involved in a clearly defined dissertation project under the supervision of a staff member of their home university or from the Nuremberg School of Economics and Business Administration or Erlangen Institute of Economics, and to carry out this research project in association with a host supervisor from the university in Northern Iraq. Doctoral student grants are provided on a competitive basis for a period of at least six months and up to one year. They may be renewed for up to a total of two years.

c) Master students in economics or related social sciences departments of German universities who are working or planning to work on a Master thesis on Iraqi economy or economic policy in Iraq and would like to pursue a part of this research project at a University in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, preferably at the University of Salahaddin in Erbil, may apply for a master student grant of the Center for Iraq Studies (CIS).

Eligible applicants ordinarily have a Bachelor in economics and must be ready to attend seminars and colloquia at the Iraqi host university. They will be in residence in the area of the host university during the period of the scholarship, which normally runs from September 1st to February 27 or from March 1st to August 31st each year.

Applicants are expected to be involved in a clearly defined research project under the supervision of a staff member of their home university, and to carry out this research project in association with a host supervisor from the Iraqi university. Master student grants are provided on a competitive basis for a period of six months and up to one year.
