Overview
The Society for the Humanities will sponsor two postdoctoral teaching-research fellowships in the humanities, each awarded for the two-year period beginning July 2011. Each fellowship offers a stipend of $45,000/year. While in residence at Cornell, Mellon Fellows hold department affiliations and have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships are available in two areas of specialization.
Department of History of Art
With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, the Department of History of Art at Cornell University invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship. The term of the appointment is from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013. We welcome applicants whose research and teaching focus on the overlapping areas of popular culture and media in the United States. It would be particularly useful for students in the Department if the person's research and teaching covered some combination of: modern and contemporary art, popular culture, including media and fashion, gender and sexuality studies, and the social history of the United States. The Department is especially interested in someone whose work engages Asian-American studies.
While in residence at Cornell, postdoctoral fellows hold department affiliation and have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work. The fellow will teach in his or her area of interest, one introductory level lecture course such as "The Immigrant Imagination" and one upper-level seminar such as "Popular Cultural and Visual Practice in Asian America." In addition, the Mellon Fellow is invited to participate in the Society for the Humanities' events, including weekly seminar luncheons.
Applicants who have received the Ph.D. degree between September 2005 and June 30, 2011 are eligible to apply. Applicants who do not have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of application must include a letter from the committee or department chair stating that the Ph.D. degree will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins.
