PhD scholarship at Australian Centre for Indigenous History
ARC Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)

The Australian Centre for Indigenous History, located in the School of History at the Australian National University, invites applications for an Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) scholarship leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The scholarship is funded via the Australian Research Council.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the PhD candidate will participate in research into the Indigenous histories of sites in the Northern Territory.

The project will investigate the social and environmental links creating historical ‘highways’ of understanding in specific landscapes, and will create innovative models for Indigenous and landscape-focused historical interpretation. The student will work directly with Chief Investigators, including Professor Ann McGrath, Shino Konishi, Peter Read and Luke Taylor. In addition, the student will receive support from staff of the project Partner Organisations.

These comprise NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change, Director of National Parks (Australia), National Film and Sound Archives and Ronin Films. The University of Sydney and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies are also collaborating organizations.

The scholar will be required to have a background in history or a similar social science discipline. The applicant will also be expected to be interested in developing histories in multi-media formats.

A demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Indigenous Australian communities and people is required.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are particularly encouraged to apply. The scholarship includes a stipend of $27,222 per annum (tax free) for three years. As well as project funding support being available for the student’s travel and other project-related expenses, the student will be eligible for standard College of Arts and Social Sciences research funding.

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian Citizens or permanent residents of Australia who meet admission requirements for entry into a PhD research program at The Australian National University.
