PhD on antibiotic resistance, Denmark

Overview

Department of Veterinary Disease Biology wishes to appoint a PhD student within microbiology from 1st September 2010 to 31st August 2013.

Job description

The project will focus on extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in animals. With reference to the project manager, Associate Prof. Luca Guardabassi, the laboratory work will mainly consist of a field longitudinal study and genetic characterization of ESBL-positive isolates from pigs and other animal species, including plasmid sequencing and typing. The ultimate goal of the project is to elucidate the epidemiology of ESBL-producing E. coli at the farm and population levels.

ESBL-producing E. coli are multidrug-resistant bacteria associated with a significant risk for increased mortality in human infections. These bacteria were originally confined to hospital environments but are now increasingly reported in community-acquired infections. During the last years, ESBL-encoding genes, mainly belonging to the CTX-M type, have been reported in various animal species, including pigs, cattle and companion animals. However, very little is known about the mechanisms by which these resistance genes spread among animals and the animal contribution to the ESBL problem in humans.

The PhD fellowship is co-funded by the Danish Food Industry Agency and by the Faculty of Life Sciences. The PhD study is part of a larger project in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark, Statens Serum Institut and the Danish Pig Production. The PhD student will undergo interdisciplinary training in microbiology and epidemiology, and will have the opportunity to interact professionally with other young scientists working on ESBL-related topics and to generate interesting synergies with other doctoral and postdoctoral projects. Short periods of research training abroad may be included in the PhD plan.

The PhD student is expected to contribute to teaching, including laboratory practicals in the microbiology course for veterinary students and co-supervision of MSC projects on ESBL-related topics.

The appointee should have qualifications within the following areas:
Bacteriology
Molecular biology

The place of employment is the University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences, Department of Veterinary Disease Biology, Grønnegaardsvej 15, 1870 Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Qualification requirements

In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:
MSc degree in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or Biology
Fluency in English
Laboratory experience in the area antibiotic resistance will be considered as an advantage

Terms of employment

The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
