At the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, there is a vacant position as a postdoctoral fellow. The position is part of the interdisciplinary project "Health promotion, dignity and human rights: improvement of maternal health", with funding from the Norwegian Research Council and the University of Bergen, Norway.

A postdoctoral position is a temporary appointment. The term of employment for this position is two years, starting from September 1, 2010. No one can be employed for more than one temporary appointment at the same institution. Postdoctoral positions aim to qualify the selected candidates for work in senior positions within their disciplines. The applicants must have obtained a PhD degree in law .Appointment to the position will be conditional upon the thesis being approved by the PhD committee set up to evaluate it. Knowledge and experience related to human rights, in particular social rights, is welcome. The applicant is welcome to present ideas as for how to develop and undertake the project within the postdoctoral period.
Regulations for gender quotas for scientific positions will be applied. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. If several applicants are equally qualified for the position, the rules in the Personnel Regulations for gender quotas for scientific positions will be applied.

The salary for a postdoctoral fellow is set at NOK 519 700, per annum (code 1352/ pay framework 24/ level 65). Higher salaries may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
The postdoctoral fellow at Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, will undertake legal analyses of the international, national and local legal frameworks, analyse to what extent national and local regulations as well as the operation of maternal health services in Tanzania operate within a human rights framework and comply with human rights requirements concerning the right to health. In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will, in close collaboration with the postdoctoral fellow in Tanzania, analyse to what extent application of the human rights approach and legal framework promotes maternal health in Tanzania. The postdoctoral fellow(s) will benefit from a solid group of experienced researchers with various scientific background at the University of Bergen and at Muhimbili University of Health and Social Sciences. The postdoctoral projects will be developed in collaboration with and support from the research group.

This is a collaborative project between Faculty of Law, University of Bergen and Muhimbili University of Health and Social Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, including postdoctoral fellowships both in Bergen and Dar es Salaam. The project is rooted in the fact that maternal mortality is a serious problem in many African countries, including Tanzania. The project will be undertaken both from a legal human rights perspective focussing on state obligations and from the medical, social and participatory perspectives of health promotion. An overall goal is to integrate findings from both fields, in order to come up with specific recommendations concerning the implementation and application of international human rights standards in local contexts.
