PhD Position in Infrastructure Management, ETH Zurich

Overview

The PhD work will be coupled with the externally funded research project entitled ?Methodology to accurately estimate the quantities of construction materials used in cement plant construction projects (MIPP)?.

The objective of MIPP is to develop an accurate method of estimating the cost of building cement plants, in particular with respect to the civil engineering/construction objects, such as supports for material handling (e.g. conveyor belt), transfer towers, buildings for the main equipment and storage silos. Although these 200 million to over one billion US dollar projects are not the most expensive in the construction industry, they have in the past years exhibited some of the widest deviations from initial estimates (quantities and costs), resulting in cost over runs on numerous recent projects of up to 40% of total initial cost estimates.

Part of the challenge will be to take into consideration the multitude of variables that impact the amount of structural materials used in the building of cement plants, such as: applicable design standards, building codes, climatic conditions, overall cement production capacity, soil conditions, wind loads, Earthquake loads, etc.

In addition to these parameters the sometimes large variation in construction techniques and unit costs from country to country and even area to area, must be taken into consideration. The work on the MIPP project will be conducted in close collaboration with HOLCIM, one of the world?s leading suppliers of cement and aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel.

The successful applicant will have a master's level in civil engineering. English and German are the working languages of the institute.
