Graduate schools play a key role not only in developing internationally competitive centres of top-level research and scientific excellence in Germany but also in increasing their recognition and prestige. They serve as an instrument of quality assurance in promoting young researchers and are based on the principle of training outstanding doctoral students within an excellent research environment. Graduate schools thus offer ideal conditions for doctoral students within a broad scientific area and, as integrative institutions with international visibility, they encourage students to be active members of their academic and social communities. As a result, graduate schools will extend far beyond DFG Research Training Groups and differ from them substantially.

Once you have clear ideas about this, please follow this link:
Application Platform
On that page, register for application
Wait for an e-mail confirming your registration
Log in and fill in the application form (take your time, you can interrupt the process as often as you like)
Important notice: Do not ask your referees to send letters right now. Only ask your referees AFTER a notification that you were selected for an interview AND wait for our instructions. In this way we avoid hundreds of letters that are written in vain.
Selected applicants from Europe (or travelling in Europe at that time) will then be invited for an interview in Würzburg in January 2010 (travel subsidies available). International applicants from outside Europe will be interviewed by Video-Conferencing.
Applicants from China, Mongolia and Vietnam are required to apply for an APS Certificate. This certificate is not necessary for the application as such but is obligatory for the final admission. Without it no candidate from the above mentioned countries will be admitted to the Graduate School of Life Sciences.
Candidates concerned have to send their documents to the “Akademische Prüfstelle” (APS, Academic Certification Unit) of the German Embassy in Beijing, Ulan Bator and Hanoi, respectively. There the documents will be checked and a certificate of authenticity will be issued.
