Scotland: The Gannochy Trust Innovation Award of The Royal Society of Edinburgh

Overview

This major award, funded by The Gannochy Trust and carrying a prize of £50,000 and other benefits, will be made annually by the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh to an individual based in Scotland, aged 45 or under, who has shown an outstanding record of innovation and achievement which has the potential for significant social or economic benefit for Scotland. The Award will be made to an individual and not to a company, although award winners may be carrying out their work in, or in collaboration with, Scottish based small to medium sized enterprises. The first Gannochy Award was made in June 2003, at a high profile award ceremony.

Eligibility criteria – the individual nominated:

- must be based in Scotland or have other substantial connections with Scotland
- must be able to demonstrate outstanding innovation (which has a practical demonstration available) and achievement
- must be able to demonstrate his/her innovation has the potential for social and economic benefit
- must be 45 or under by 1 January 2010
Closing date – Friday 14 May 2010


Selection process – details of the timetable are attached. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in mid to late June 2010.
Confidentiality – all nominations will be treated as commercially confidential by the RSE and all those involved in the selection and assessment process will be required to comply with a confidentiality agreement.
Nomination papers – the nomination form must be completed in full and two A4 single-sided pages must be attached. The names of two referees must be provided. A one-page (maximum) curriculum vitae must be included with the nomination papers. The nomination papers should be sent electronically to the Research Awards Manager (contact details below) and one signed, hard copy must be received by the closing date.

Conditions of nomination:

• Nominators must obtain the prior consent of the person being nominated, (unless nominating self).
• The RSE will not be liable or held responsible for any errors or omissions made by nominators in their submissions.
• Repeat nominations are acceptable but must make clear any progress that has been made since the previous submission. A copy of a previous submission will not be accepted for consideration.
• Multiple nominations in any one year are acceptable.
• The RSE will, at its discretion, seek independent assessors’ views on the merit of nominations received.
• Nominated candidates must be available to attend for interview at the RSE in mid to late June 2010.
• The award winner will be expected to co-operate fully with the presentation arrangements and associated publicity, and to confirm that there are no IPR issues which would restrict publishing details of the innovation, were the award to be made.
• The award winner must provide a full report, twelve months after the award has been made, on progress and how the funding has been used.
• The decision of the Council of the RSE will be final and absolute.
