Japan: For Canadian Students - Research Program under Monbukagakusho MEXT Scholarship

Overview

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho a.k.a. MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to canadian students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

RESEARCH STUDIES

Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1976 (for the 2011 Program). The term of this scholarship for research (non-degree) students is 2 years beginning in April 2011 or 18 months beginning in October 2011. For master’s or doctorate students, the term of this scholarship is the period needed to complete degree requirements. Six months of Japanese language studies is included in either case. Applicants must be university graduates. The study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied, or a related field.

Amount awarded

In 2010, the allowance will be 152,000 yen per month (for research students), 154,000 yen per month (for master’s students), or 155,000 yen per month (for doctorate students). These terms may be subject to change.

The deadline for Research Studies applications for 2011 is May 14, 2010.

Timeline for Monbukagakusho (MEXT)

Research Studies Scholarship Programme

Late March – mid-May: Recruitment for Research Studies (RS)
Early June: First screening (Part 1) (Application documents reviewed at Embassy)
Late June – July: First screening (Part 2) (examinations and interviews at Embassy or Consulate)
July - August: Contact with Japanese universities (for those applicants who pass the first screening process)
Early September: Application documents forwarded from Canada to MEXT in Tokyo

October: Second screening done by MEXT
Following February: Notification of acceptance
Following March (or Sept.): Pre-arrival immigration procedures
Following April (or Oct.): Arrival in Japan
