USA: For Namibian Citizens - Fulbright English Teaching Program (TESOL)

Overview

The American Cultural Center is pleased to announce a new Fulbright program for study in the United States. The program is for candidates seeking a Master's degree in teaching of English as a Second or other Language (TESOL). The program's goals are to assist in strengthening English teaching capacity in Southern Africa. The targeted audience for this program is high school and university teachers of English.

Eligible candidates

Nominees must be Namibian citizens or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid passport.

Nominees must have completed their undergraduate education and hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree (4 years) by the start of the grant period.

Nominees must be high school or university teachers of English and have a minimum of two year experience teaching English

Nominees should be committed to work at an institution in Namibia upon completion of the designated program.

Nominees should have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program and to return home after the authorized program.

Nominees must meet the minimum score on required standardized tests the Institute of International Education (IIE) advises that nominees must have the following:

TOEFL - satisfactory test results for TOEFL (550/575 on paper based test or 80/91 on the IBT test);
GRE - a minimum score of at least 1000 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections;


Applications

Preliminary applications can be collected at the American Cultural Center, Third Floor, Sanlam Center, Independence Avenue, Windhoek in October of each year, or e-mail Mr. George Beukes at beukesgm@state.gov.

Program Information

Degree objective - awards are granted for study towards a master's degree only. Grantees will be placed in 1 to 2 year programs. Grantees are not eligible to apply for extensions or transfer of visa sponsorship to participate in Ph.D. or additional study/research programs.

Grant Duration

Grants are awarded initially for a maximum of 12 months. Grantees should be issued a j-1 visa under the g-1-1 program. The specific grant information for each grantee will be provided in their terms of appointment.

Renewal grants provide funds to continue in an approved program and are subject to grantee performance and availability of funds. Grantees should contact IIE to determine if they are eligible for renewal.

An extension of a grant allows the grantee to complete an authorized program or to participate in an approved practical training program with funding from non-Fulbright sources.

Placement

Academic placements are arranged by the Institute of International Education (IIE). IIE will take into consideration each candidate's university preference. However, IIE may not submit a candidate's application to a preferred school if the candidate clearly does not meet one or more requirements for admission, or if the institution does not offer an appropriate program.
