Overview
The Center for Healthy Aging invites applications for 5 three-year co-financed PhD fellowships from candidates that hold - or expect to hold - a master's degree in September 2010 at the latest.
The positions are open at the earliest convenience until 30 September 2010 at the latest. The successful candidates will be associated to the Center for Healthy Aging and employed at different departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Enrolment at the Copenhagen Graduate School of Health Sciences is a prerequisite for employment (referring to the Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at Universities, no. 18, 14 January 2008 - the PhD Order).
Center for Healthy Aging
The Center for Healthy Aging was established in 2009 to promote new avenues of research and education focused on a lifespan approach to healthy aging. The approach is multidisciplinary and the research programs span a broad spectrum, from the molecular and cellular level to individuals and society (healthyaging.ku.dk). The Center is organized around five research programs:

Center for Healthy Aging is established as a research network at the Faculty of Health Sciences and is funded by the Danish Nordea Foundation, www.nordeafonden.dk.
The five available PhD projects are:
1) Clinical, Neurophysiological, Immunological and Molecular Biological Aspects of Salivary Gland Function in Cognitive Dysfunction and Early Neurodegenerative Disease
The aim of the project is to investigate functional, structural and molecular biological aspects of salivary gland function and to determine if functional and structural changes in salivary gland function are early manifestations of premature ageing/early neurodegenerative conditions. These endpoints will be compared with cognitive variables, sleep patterns and basic brain functions. The project forms part of the research program 1a led by Professor Lene Juel Rasmussen.
The study is an interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers at the Dept. of Odontology, Dept. of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Dept. of Public Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen as well as the Danish Center for Sleep Medicine, Dept. of Clinical Neurophysiology, Glostrup Hospital, Dept. of Clinical Neurophysiology and Clinical Physiology/Nuclearmedicine, Glostrup Hospital.

2) Brain Connectivity and Cognitive Function in Healthy and Accelerated Aging
Spontaneous activity in the brain is organized in characteristic network patterns, that may each be associated with specific functions and as well as with performance in mental or motor tasks. In the present study we will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate spontaneous brain networks in a large cohort of middle-aged men, with or without signs of early cognitive impairment. Applicants should have a background in biology or medicine, a documented interest in the human brain and preferably publications in the neuroscience area. The project forms part of the research program 1b led by Professor Martin Lauritzen. The place of work is at the Glostrup Hospital.

3) Connective Tissue in Tendon and Skeletal Muscle with Aging: Importance of Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-I).Age-associated loss of muscle mass, connective tissue and function is understood well. The study focuses on the role of insulin-like growth factor I for synthesis of skeletal muscle and connective tissue in relation to ageing. This will be studied in a model of short-term immobilization and subsequent rehabilitation in both young and old individuals. Applicants should have a background in medicine, with a documented interest in exercise physiology or sports medicine. The project forms part of the research program 2 led by Professor Michael Kjær.

4) Coordination of Preventive Medication in the Health Care System after Structural Reforms - a Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Barriers and Tools in a Complex Organization
The aim of the project is to study, how integrated plans can be developed for preventive medication among the elderly by coordination of decision making and practice across the many actors in health care. The project includes surveys among decision makers and qualitative analyses of decisions and practice related to preventive medication in a rapidly changing health care system. The project forms part of the research program 4 led by Professor Allan Krasnik.

5) Diabetes Research Communication and the Changing Identities of Type 2 Diabetes Patients, 1960-2010
The aim of the project is to investigate how the identity of diabetic patients has changed in the course of the last half century, from the 1960s, when research communication was largely restricted to short consultations between authoritative doctors and compliant patients supported by leaflets and other printed material, to the the current situation, where the identity of the competent type 2 diabetes patient is constructed in a complex research communicative landscape populated by a variety of communicating actors, including the national health care system, pharmaceutical and medical device companies and active patient organizations. The project is part of research program 5 led by Associate Professor Lene Otto and Medical Museion´s new program for health science communication led by Professor Thomas Soderqvist.

PhD Qualifications, Conditions, and Procedure
The successful applicant must hold a Masters degree or have submitted the thesis, which should be approved before employment. Relevant course work, previous research, and practical experience should be described. The applicant should have a high level of academic achievement within the chosen field and should also have the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
The grant is for a three year stipend under condition that the project is accepted for the PhD study course at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
The position is 3-yearly and is carried in accordance with "Aftale mellem AC og Finansministeriet om lønnede ph.d.-stipendiater" (Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) on salaried scholarships). As scholarship holders are included in the agreements regarding ?Ny Løn? (new salary), the salary is set as a result of an individual salary negotiation. The scholarship holder is obligated - with no further salary - to carry out tasks in connexion with lectures etc. for up to 840 working hours in the duration of the 3 year employment.
