Sweden: Uppsala University PhD student position in Neuroscience

Overview

PhD student position in Neuroscience
At the Department of Neuroscience. A newly established lab in the Department of Neuroscience in the Uppsala University seeks a candidate to pursue a PhD degree to start from June 2010.

Project description: The study of nerve cells in action is moving from electrode- to optical-based approaches. Using genetically encoded probes, neuronal activity can be assessed optically by monitoring the concentration of ions (e.g. genetically encoded Ca2+ sensors) or voltage (voltage-sensitive fluorescent proteins – VSFP). In addition, recent advances in molecular biology allows for the expression of proteins capable of activating or inactivating the neurons when stimulated by light (opsins).

The first part of the project will involve the construction of a microscope for imaging the activity of neural networks in brain slices and in vivo. Later, we will study neuronal networks (the candidate may choose between the basal ganglia and auditory nuclei in the brainstem) using VSFP and genetically encoded calcium sensors. Molecular biology approaches will be used to produce animals expressing photo-activated proteins for the dynamic control of neuronal activity and voltage-sensitive fluorescent proteins (VSFP) to monitor membrane voltage of specific neuronal populations.

Learning goals: At the end of the PhD, the candidate will be able to perform state of the art electrophysiology and neuronal imaging. Additionally, the candidate will gain a strong knowledge in molecular biology techniques. During his/her studies, we will also pursue the improvement of scientific writing skills and the core abilities necessary to follow the academic career.

Candidate requirements: Knowledge computer programing for data acquisition is essential. Please note, the project will involve animal experimentation. Knowledge in optics, electrophysiology and/or molecular biology is desirable but not essential. It will be possible to perform part of the project at a laboratory in Natal-RN, Brazil.

Requirements for graduate students are contained in the Higher Education Chapter 5, paragraphs 1-7.
