USA: USC Breast Fellowship Program, University of Southern California

Overview

The USC Breast Fellowship Program is a Society of Surgical Oncology-certified training program based at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. The mission of the USC Breast Fellowship Program is to provide general surgeons with a concentrated and comprehensive training experience to prepare them for their careers as dedicated breast surgeons. Among it many unique attributes, USC has the only USC-based breast fellowship program teaching oncoplastic surgery, a specialized surgical approach that combines the principles of cancer surgery with the techniques of plastic surgery to achieve optimal cosmetic and oncologic results. In addition, the USC Breast Fellowship Program stands alone as the only training program in the US teaching endoscopic breast surgery and intraoperative radiotherapy.

At USC, we pride ourselves on selecting and training surgeons who desire to be leaders in breast cancer research and the evolution of breast surgical care nationally and globally.

The USC Breast Fellowship Program is a participant of the Society of Surgical Oncology Breast Fellowship Matching Program. All applicants must apply through this matching program, which can be accessed at www.surgonc.org. Three fellows are accepted each year. No fellows will be accepted outside of the SSO Matching Program.

CRITERIA FOR APPLICANTS

A fellowship candidate must meet the following criteria:

•Completed training and hold an M.D. or equivalent degree
•Board eligible or board certified in Surgery, Plastic Surgery, or OB Gyn*
(*The qualifications of non-general surgery-trained applicants will be assessed on the basis of of their ability to complete the USC Breast Fellowship Program within 1 year.)

•Three letters of recommendation, including 1 from the applicant’s Training Program Director and 2 from clinicians who are best able to judge the applicant’s character and abilities
•A current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
•A personal statement
•A recent color photograph (passport size and quality, ~ 2” X 2”)

TIME SENSITIVE: All applications, CV’s, personal statements, and photos must be received by August 15, 2010 to be considered for an interviews for the 2011-2012 fellowship class. In addition, ALL letters of recommendation must by received by USC by August 30, 2010.

AN INVITATION FOR INTERVIEW IS REQUIRED

Based on an initial review of application materials, a subset of applicants will be selected and invited for interviews. Results of the initial review will be announced to applicants at least one more prior to the scheduled interview date. Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview.

FELLOWSHIP INTERVIEWS

Selected applicants for the 2010-11 Fellowship Class will be interviewed in person on October 6, 2009. Arrangements should be made to arrive in Los Angeles on October 5, 2009, and to depart from USC after 5pm on October 6, 2009. All applicants are encouraged to attend a welcome dinner on the evening of October 5, 2009.

Interviews for the 2011-2012 class will be held in October 2010. The exact interview date will be announced at a later date.

FELLOW SELECTION PROCESS

After completing interviews, all applicants for the 2010-2011 class must send the completed SSO Match Program Application directly to the SSO by November 15, 2009. No applicants will be considered outside the SSO Matching Program.

Our ranking of applicants will be based on the following factors:

•In-person interviews with a selection committee
•Letters of recommendation
•Curriculum Vitae and past accomplishments
•Personal Statement
•In-training examination scores
•A copy of ECFMG certificate (applicable to foreign medical graduates only)
FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATES

The USC Breast Fellowship Program requires that foreign medical graduates have their Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification prior to being accepted into the fellowship program. Please send a copy of your ECFMG certificate, notarized as a true copy of the original document, with your fellowship application. The ECFMG www.ecfmg.org is authorized by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) to sponsor foreign national physicians as Exchange Visitors in accredited clinical training programs or their directly associated fellowships. The individual Exchange Visitor is required to obtain and remain in valid J-1 visa status throughout his/her stay in the United States.

EXTERNSHIPS

The USC Breast Fellowship Program’s priority is to optimize the training experience for USC breast fellows and the residents and medical students rotating on the Breast service. Our policy does not permit externships for prospective applicants to the Breast Fellowship Program.
