UK: 5 PhD Studentships at Energy Technologies Research Institute (ETRI)

Overview

Reference : ENG410
Closing Date : 22 June 2010
Posted in scholarization.blogspot.com

The Energy Technologies Research Institute (ETRI) at the University of Nottingham is a multidisciplinary institute involving researchers across Science, Engineering and socio-economic disciplines. ETRI has a £50 million portfolio of energy research activity spanning the following research priorities:

• Carbon abatement in fossil energy.
• Energy vectors and storage.
• Renewable energy.
• Low energy buildings.
• Future electrical power grids.
• Environment, policy and society.

Autumn 2011 will see the opening of the new ETRI R&D centre which is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and will showcase novel alternative energy technologies and undertake industrial focused R&D across the range of ETRI research priorities. The building will have a smart energy grid providing the unique opportunity for the research undertaken to feed into the energy supply and demand for the building, providing real-time data for the use and performance of novel alternative energy technologies. There will also be fuelling points for electric and hydrogen vehicles, enabling vehicle use to be incorporated into the smart energy community. It will also be linked to our existing Creative Energy Homes – seven occupied dwellings demonstrating novel low-carbon technologies. As part of this exciting project there are five PhD studentships to undertake research projects in the following key research areas:

1. Analysis of energy usage in the Creative Energy Homes and the new ETRI building.
2. Design of a micro-electrical grid for a smart energy community.
3. Strategies for energy management and control in a smart energy community.
4. Renewable energy technologies within the new ETRI building.
5. Energy storage and/or low-carbon transport related to new ETRI building.

For more information about ETRI and its research see: http://www.energy.nottingham.ac.uk/.

Students who satisfy the UK residency requirement will need either a first class or upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject such as: electrical, chemical, mechanical or materials engineering, physics, chemistry or materials sciences or the built environment. The ETRI PhDs are suited to anyone with an interest in alternative energy technologies who are keen to tackle key research challenges facing the sector. The projects are multidisciplinary in nature and will be attractive to researchers with a science or engineering background.

Amount awarded

These studentships are available from October 2010 for a period of three years, with a stipend of up to £18,000 per annum (the stipend for each project depends on the industrial partner involved). Tuition fees are fully funded for UK and EU applicants (partially funded for international students).

Inquiries

Informal inquiries may be addressed to Dr G Walker, Deputy Director of ETRI, Email: gavin.walker@nottingham.ac.uk.
