PhD fellow in Molecular Plant Biology - The role of NTRC in redox regulation of chloroplast function

Overview

Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology wishes to appoint a PhD fellow in The role of NTRC in redox regulation of chloroplast functions for 3 years from November 1st 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
The work of the PhD fellow will be in connection with a research project that aims at understanding the role of a NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase (NTRC) in plants. NTRC is an enzyme found in the chloroplast that within a single polypeptide chain contain the domains to act as a thioredoxin reductase system and NTRC might be important both for redox regulation of disulfide bridges and scavenging H2O2. NTRC has been shown to be involved in starch synthesis, chlorophyll biosynthesis and photoperiodical development, but how these functions are interconnected and what other physiological mechanisms are affected need to be studied further. The project will involve heterologous expression of genes in E. coli, enzyme assays, and transformation of plants with tagged versions of NTRC. Mutants and transformed lines will be characterized using physiological methods and bioimaging approaches. In this work, we mainly use model organisms like Arabidopsis thaliana and moss (Physcomitrella patens) for which we already have established mutants and some transgenic lines.

Research environment

The project will be carried out at the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology at University of Copenhagen (http://www.plbio.life.ku.dk/English.aspx), where several independent research groups with strong expertise in photosynthesis, primary and secondary metabolism, bioimaging and bioengineering are located. There is an active and open scientific communication through seminar series hosted by the department and the VKR Research Centre "Pro-Active Plants" (http://www.proactiveplants.life.ku.dk/). The PhD school (http://www.fobina.dk/) provides excellent programs and support as well as opportunities for networking with scientific and industrial communities.

Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:

Obtained Master´s degree in relation to the areas listed below.

The applicant must have qualifications within the following areas:
General molecular biological and biochemical approaches.
Sufficient knowledge of plant biology and physiology.
Experimental experiences with plant and moss cultivations.

Applicants with strong sense of commitment to the progress of the research project and with proficient scientific communication skills will be favoured.

Fluency in spoken and written English.

The PhD fellow is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills to work effectively in the laboratory and to make positive contribution to the atmosphere within the group.

Terms of employment
The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

The position as PhD fellow requires the applicant to be approved for admission to the PhD programme at LIFE when accepted for the post.
