PhD scholarship within Computer Science at University of Copenhagen

Overview

The Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (DIKU) invites applications for a PhD scholarship.

DIKU has existed since 1970 and has grown from 10 staff and 550 students to a total of around 100 staff and 1,000 students today. The department performs research at an international level in close contact with research institutions and industrial companies in Denmark and abroad. It comprises the following research groups: The Algorithms and Programming Languages (APL) Group; the Human Centered Computing (HCC) Group; and the Image Group.

We encourage highly qualified and motivated candidates to apply for the PhD scholarship within computer science for example within the following representative strategic focus areas:
Functional programming
Robust system software
Software architecture
Computational biology
Usability and user experience
Tangible and multi-touch interfaces
Computer supported cooperative work and healthcare IT
Super-computing
Physics-based animation
Machine learning

Qualifications

Candidates should have an MSc degree in mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or similar. Good programming skills are an advantage.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The appointment is for a period of 3 years and should lead to a dissertation.

Submission of applications
Applicants are requested to submit their application by filling in Part 1 of the application form that can be downloaded from "Application for scholarship and admission": http://www.science.ku.dk/phd/applying/forms/

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are invited to apply. The application form and requested enclosures along with a motivation letter must be submitted as a single pdf-file to PhDapplications@diku.dk and be received no later than 1 September 2010 at 12.00 noon CET. Applications received after the deadline or with insufficient documentation or otherwise not complying with the above requirements will not be considered.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the relevant Head of Research Group prior to application in order to get advice on making a PhD project description.

Algorithms and Programming Languages (APL): The group works with the development of programming language concepts, technology and applications in theory and practice, ranging from new computational models to applications in systems and software development. Furthermore, the group develops efficient algorithms for solving problems within e.g. design of electronic circuits and other network design problems as well as computational biology.
