PhD scholarship in Mathematics Education at University of Agder

Overview

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment for a period of three years as PhD Research Fellow in Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Engineering and Science. The position is currently located in Kristiansand, Norway. The starting date, after January 1, 2011, is to be negotiated with the Faculty.

The Faculty of Engineering and Science presently has a scientific group in mathematics education, and history of mathematics, including six professors, four associate professors and two research assistants. There are approximately 20 PhD candidates registered on the PhD programme. Over recent years the group has been responsible for a number of large mathematics teaching developmental research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and has been host institution of the Nordic Graduate School in Mathematics Education.

The focus for the position will be directed towards teaching and learning mathematics within one of the current areas of research and development in the field of mathematics education at the University of Agder.

Proposals to research teaching and learning mathematics at university level are particularly sought and will be prioritised.

Proposals in other areas of research relevant to the interests of the Mathematics Education Research Group will be considered in the absence of sound proposals in the above mentioned area. These include:

•Developmental research in the teaching and learning of mathematics (from kindergarten to university level)
•Task design and implementation for teaching and learning mathematics
•ICT and teaching and learning mathematics
•History of mathematics
•Mathematics teacher education and professional development
Other areas within the areas of competence of the Mathematics Education Group may also be proposed by the applicants.


The applicant is expected to present a project outline of within one of the areas listed above and indicate his/her interest and experience within the area. The project outline will be considered as part of the evaluation of applicants. Following appointment the research proposal will be developed through discussions between the PhD candidate and supervisors appointed by the university.

The successful applicant must have a master’s degree in mathematics education or mathematics, or equivalent academic/professional background. Sound competence in mathematics and mathematics education is required, relevant teaching experience will be an advantage.

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Also, for proposals that focus on teaching and learning mathematics, a high level of proficiency in spoken and written Norwegian is required.

The PhD Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD Programme in Mathematics Education at the University of Agder within three months after the starting date. A plan for the completion of the PhD in Mathematics Education during the period of employment will be worked out in agreement with the University. The plan will include required coursework and the production of a thesis based on original research.

The PhD Research Fellow will be expected to contribute to an active research community that promotes the personal and professional growth of the doctoral candidate. The position places great demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal-oriented work, ability to concentrate and attention to detail. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic background and results, attainment, and any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

The position is for a period of three years, or four years with 25% of the workload allocated to other tasks at the Faculty’s discretion. It is assumed that the PhD Research Fellow will complete a doctoral dissertation within the period of employment. It may be pertinent for the candidate to stay at an external institution or with a national or international partner for part of the stipend period.

The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1017, salary grade 48 (NOK 383.900). A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions. •Master's degree/higher degree certificate, with a summary of the courses/subjects included in the degree*
•Applicants with a foreign higher education must attach an official description of the grading system used at the issuing institution
•Summary (approximately 1-2 pages) of the master's thesis (in special cases the university will ask for the complete master's thesis)
•Applicants who are required to document their English proficiency must submit their TOEFL or IELTS test results (these may be forwarded after the closing date)
•Summary or links to the applicant's scientific publications (if any)
•A description of the candidate’s research interests and background for the project applied for
•A project outline within one of the areas listed above
* Original documents of the certificates/diplomas and transcripts of records or authenticated copies of the original documents with stamp, date, and readable signature from a public office (e.g. university, college, or police) must be presented before appointment.

The applicants are fully responsible for submitting complete documentation in a sufficient number of copies before the closing date. All documentation must be available in a Scandinavian language or English.

Files that are overly large or in an irregular format will not be included in the documents that will accompany the application through the appointment process.
