2012 Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarships for Australian Citizens

Overview

Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarships are available to Australian citizens to engage in 3 - 12 months of postdoctoral research or professional training in the United States. The scholarship is aimed at applicants who have recently completed a PhD.

[Note: To be eligible, your thesis must be lodged prior to submitting your Fulbright application]. The scholarship is generally offered to applicants who are no more than three years post-PhD, however, applicants who are four to five years postdoctoral and present a strong case will be considered. All else being equal, preference will be given to applicants who have not yet gained tenure at an institution.

The Commission offers up to two Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarships annually. Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarships are open to all fields of study and may include:

•Indigenous Scholarship supported by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
•Fulbright State and Territory Scholarships support study or research related to a topic or issue of importance to that state or territory.
◦New South Wales Scholarship was announced in March 2009, and is supported by the NSW Government and NSW universities, with further support to be raised from companies and individuals
◦Northern Territory Scholarship is supported by the NT Government, Charles Darwin University and corporate sponsor, Blackboard Asia Pacific
◦Queensland Scholarship established by the QLD Government and all the QLD based universities
◦South Australia Scholarship supported by the South Australian Government and South Australian universities
◦Tasmania Scholarship sponsored by the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania
◦Victoria Scholarship established by the Victorian Government and all the Victorian based universities
◦Western Australia Scholarship established by the W.A. Government and W.A. based universities, companies and individuals


Postdoctoral Scholarship benefits

•Scholarship valued at up to A$45,000 and includes:
◦Generous travel entitlement
◦Monthly stipend for a maximum of 12 months
◦Establishment and baggage allowances
◦Dependents travel and monthly allowance
◦Transport and accommodation to attend an Orientation Program and the Fulbright Presentation Dinner in Australia (March)
◦Transport and accommodation to an Enrichment Seminar with international Fulbright Scholars in the U.S.
•Transport and accommodation to an Enrichment Seminar with international Fulbright Scholars in the U.S.
•Access to U.S., Australian and international Fulbright Scholars and distinguished alumni.
(Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholars who also receive a salary related to their postdoctoral position in the U.S., at or above the value of the Fulbright stipend, will be granted a set amount of A$20,000)

Duration

•Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholars must spend a minimum of 3 months and maximum of 12 months in the U.S.
•Fulbright funding is for the first 12 months only and applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient additional funds to support themselves and any dependants during their stay in the U.S.

Applications for the 2012 Fulbright Australian Scholarships will open on 1 June 2011.
