Overview
The University of Leicester is one of the UK's leading universities, committed to international excellence through the creation of world changing research and high quality, inspirational teaching. The Department of Geography is one of the best geography departments in the UK (5th in the Guardian rankings for 2011) with an impressive set of National Student Survey Rankings (highest ranking 1st; lowest ranking 11th since 2006) and as well as success in attracting major national (SPLINT) and international (GIONET) centres of excellence and extensive research funding from the EU, National Environmental Research Council (NERC) and ESRC.
Researchers within the College of Science and Engineering have international reputations and collaborations with researchers throughout the world, making it an exciting environment for both research and teaching.
As a result of success in obtaining research council support, a single funded PhD studentship is available in Geography as part of the College’s allocation of PhD scholarships. The studentship will cover tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate only) and include a stipend of £13,590 each year over three years. The successful candidate will also receive a Research Training Support Grant worth £1000 each year. Please apply using the standard application form and note on the application that you are applying for a College scholarship. You should supply all supporting documentation at the time of application.
Research Areas
We are particularly keen to receive applications in relation to the projects below:
3D visualisation and modelling using integrated laser scanner data to aid understanding of the urban and rural environment
(Dr Claire Jarvis and Dr Kevin Tansey)
Current land use and land use change on tropical peatlands - implications for carbon stocks and emissions
(Dr Sue Page and Dr Kevin Tansey)
The geochemistry of methanogenesis in tropical peatlands
(Dr Sue Page and Dr Arnoud Boom)
Entry Requirements
Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a first class or upper second-class honours degree, or its equivalent. Anyone who holds non-standard qualifications, should, in the first instance, contact the department. Mature students who do not possess the normal qualifications but who have relevant industrial or academic experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
We welcome suitable applications from both UK/EU students and from international students (outside the EU). However we stress that funding is only available at a UK/EU rate. International students (and those ineligible for paying UK/EU rates) must demonstrate at the time of application that they can provide the difference in funding (between £7,500-£8,000 per year) for a minimum 3-year period.
The deadline for applications is 4 January 2011.
Informal Enquiries and Applications
For informal enquiries, further information, and advice on applications, please contact Dr Nick Tate, email: geogPhD@le.ac.uk, tel. 0116 223 1320
To avoid disappointment, applicants are advised to apply as early as possible.
