Postdoctoral Research Fellow for Global Change Project in Health, Environment & Sustainable Fish Production

Overview

The University of Queensland

Applications are invited for a researcher to work in a stimulating and challenging research team environment on a project that combines UQ expertise in food and nutrition with environmental expertise in fisheries sustainability

The Role: The successful applicant will conduct research on a project that combines UQ expertise in food / nutrition with environmental expertise in fisheries sustainability. The title of the project is “Reconciling Dietary Guidance to Increase Fish Consumption with the Sustainability of Global Seafood Production”. Principal Investigators are: As/Prof Geoff Marks (UQ School of Population Health); Dr Anthony J. Richardson (Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics, School of Mathematics and Physics / CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research); Dr John Kirkwood (UQ School of Geography, Planning & Environmental Management / Agri-Science Queensland); and Prof Peter Mumby (UQ School of Biological Sciences).

The project is highly multi-disciplinary and addresses several key questions concerning the provision of adequate nutrition from a resource that is threatened by over-exploitation and climate change. Moreover, the project will make specific, clear recommendations on environmentally sustainable levels of fish consumption and types of fish to consume that meet nutritional demands, given the sustainability of different fisheries and the carbon footprint associated with Australia’s fish food requirements.

We welcome applications from a broad range of disciplines.

The Person: The successful appointee will contribute to evidence-based, progressive solutions to this rapidly emerging food security issue. You will need good quantitative skills, including expertise in collating, managing and evaluating diverse types of data. Applicants must possess the appropriate qualifications (PhD level or equivalent), have an excellent research record, plus enthusiasm to investigate this set of complex, interconnected issues in innovative ways.

Applications Close: 10 December, 2010

Remuneration: The remuneration package will be in the range $53,780 – $72,950 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of 17%. This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for one year at Research Academic level A.
