USA: The Mary Baker Eddy Library awards fellowships

Overview

The Mary Baker Eddy Library awards fellowships to academic scholars and independent researchers for research in its collections, which center on the papers of Mary Baker Eddy and records documenting the history of Christian Science. Relevant areas of research include the fields of women’s history, spirituality and health, religious studies, nineteenth-century history, cultural and social history, architecture, and journalism (see the Holdings page).

The Library’s newly public collections offer scholars countless opportunities for original research. A select list of such resources include: Mary Baker Eddy’s scrapbooks and copybooks; household account ledgers and receipts; a fully-indexed file of newspapers clippings that date to the late nineteenth century; Eddy’s sermons and lectures; an extensive historic photograph collection; architectural records; early histories of branch Churches of Christ, Scientist; and Eddy’s voluminous correspondence and manuscript material, which offer opportunities for new analysis of her life and ideas.

The Library’s research programs are designed to support original contributions to scholarship and help further research by established scholars, graduate students, and recent graduates just beginning their academic careers.

Fellowship Application Instructions

1. The application form for 2011 Research Fellowships is an editable Adobe Acrobat pdf, and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0. It will be available here on November 1, 2010.

Completing the form: Open the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Acrobat Reader will allow you to fill in and print out the form, but it will not allow you to save the completed form. Please note that you will only be able to save the completed form if you use Adobe Acrobat (which must be purchased). Once the form is open, use your mouse to click on the first field at the top of the page and insert your text. Once the information has been entered, you may tab to the next field (the "paragraph return" or "enter" keys may push the text out of the field's available space, thus causing it to disappear from the form). The font size for the text has already been preset for users.

Printing the form: To print the completed form, either print from the "file" menu or select the print icon. Once the print dialogue box is open, select the "fit to page" option. This ensures that the page you see on the screen will correspond to the page printed by your printer. Failure to select this option may cause only parts of the form to be printed.

2. A research proposal of no more than 1600 words (not including bibliography). This document should consist of the following:
a) Detailed explanation of your project, including its significance and contribution to your field.
b) A description of Mary Baker Eddy Library materials to be consulted while you are in residence. It is expected that every applicant will consult with Library archive staff, in advance of submitting their application, to discuss holdings relevant to his or her research topic (617-450-7316).
c) Discussion of how you plan to share your research.

3. A current curriculum vitae.

4. Sample of recent scholarly research or publication.

5. Two letters of reference from current or recent professors or from colleagues familiar with your work. Letters should be sent to:
