Overview
The Bulgarian-American Commission for Educational Exchange administers the Fulbright graduate study program in Bulgaria. Grants last up to one academic year and are awarded in open competition to Bulgarian citizens in all fields except clinical medicine and dentistry.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have Bulgarian citizenship (green card holders and persons with double citizenship are ineligible).
Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree.
English language proficiency is required.
Applicants should be under 40 years of age and in sound health.
Students already studying in the U.S. are ineligible to apply for grants.
General Selection Criteria
Ability to meet academic requirements of the U.S. educational institutions and excellent academic record
High scores on the American standardized tests (TOEFL, GRE/GMAT), other qualifying academic experience outlined in the statement of purpose
Adaptability and personal suitability
Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens who contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture and civilization of Bulgaria.
Preference is given to applicants who have not had a prior opportunity for studying in the U.S.
All candidates will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, and sex.
Selection Procedures
Applications are subject to pre-screening.
Evaluation of study projects is carried out by Fulbright alumni and leading Bulgarian and U.S. scholars in the respective fields.
Emphasis is placed on the project's relevance to the needs and abilites of the applicant.
The extent to which the proposed study program can be effectively conducted in the U.S. and its potential contribution to the objectives of the Fulbright exchange are also reviewed.
Interviews of selected candidates are conducted by a binational nomination committee.
Nominees are subject to final approval by the Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).

Application (the web-based Fulbright Foreign Student application is located at http://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international. In addition, all supplemental documents are accessible at http://foreign.fulbrightonline.org/fulbrightpage.html Make certain to follow all instructions carefully);
Three letters of reference (can be submitted online by instructors, professors or work supervisors, or sent directly to the Fulbright Commission office);
Academic transcripts/diplomas (certified translation into English of verified copies of original academic transcript and degree certificate – scanned and attached to the application);
Valid results from American standardized tests: TOEFL (required for all candidates) and GRE (required in most fields of study with the exception of MBA and Law) or GMAT (required for MBA and business-related programs).
PLEASE NOTE:
All items should be translated into English.
Nominated candidates will have to submit a copy of the original academic transcript bearing all official legalization stamps to the Fulbright Commission.
The Fulbright Commission will advise applicants to submit a medical history and examination report if and when necessary.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS FOR AY 2012-2013: May 2, 2011
Submitting TOEFL and GRE/GMAT scores by May 2, 2011 is considered an advantage.
Final deadline for submitting official test scores: September 19, 2011
Interviews of eligible candidates take place during the second half of May. Date and time are fixed.
