Scotland: College of Humanities and Social Science Research Student Awards 2010-2011

Overview

The College Research Student Awards scheme is designed to attract high quality students applying for PhD research in the College of Humanities and Social Science.

There are two types of award being offered, each tenable for 3 years:

- A College Development Studentship, which provides a stipend as well as paying tuition fees at the EU rate;
- A College Scholarship, which pays only for the tuition fees at the EU rate.

The College Development Studentship is an extension of the current College Studentship. Successful applicants will receive a stipend and will in return provide some measure of support to their School. This work will be chosen to enhance the studentship holder's academic development. Applicants are automatically considered for both awards. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years. The College of Humanities and Social Science is now seeking applications for the 2010-2011 academic session.

College Studentships each comprise a stipend of at least £12,000 per annum (exact amount to be decided), fees paid (at Home/EU rate), and an annual research expenses allowance (£440). Applicants who are unsuccessful in obtaining a College Studentship are automatically considered for a College Scholarship.

College Scholarships pay fees at the Home/EU rate and a research expenses allowance (£440) per annum.

Eligibility

College Awards are very competitive, and only those applicants fulfilling the following criteria should apply:

- Seeking to start their first year of full-time or part-time PhD study (not MSc by Research).
-Seeking to start in the academic year beginning September 2010.
- Of outstanding academic merit and research potential. - Although candidates with an upper second class honours Bachelor's degree (or the overseas equivalent) can be considered, in order to be competitive candidates should really have the highest standard of degree qualification. For the UK, this is either a first class Bachelor's degree, or 2:1 supplemented by an excellent Intermediate or Master's degree. International qualifications will be expected to be of the same high standard. The quality of the student’s research proposal and any publications will be taken into consideration.
- Be strongly supported by the information provided by the references given in support of the PhD application.
- Factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.
- If College Award candidates are applying to study topics eligible for UK Research Council Awards then they must also apply to the relevant Research Council.

Application Procedure

Application for Admission

You must apply for PhD admission before applying for a College Award. The College Award submission cannot be considered until you have applied for postgraduate admission. A gap of at least two weeks between applying for admission and applying for an award is strongly encouraged.

Application for postgraduate admission should be made via the University’s on-line admission system. Application is made via the University’s Prospectus at www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/finder.

Applying in this way helps us to provide you with a timely response and gives you the ability to track the progress of your admission application. If you do not have routine internet access staff within the College of Humanities and Social Science Postgraduate Office can send you an application form either by email (which we prefer, as this is quick) or by post (which is much slower). Please contact the College Postgraduate Office for an emailed or paper form if you cannot use the on-line application system.
