UK: ESRC '1+3'/'+3' Awards for the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice

Overview

UK and EU students may apply for an Economic and Social Research Council '1+3' or ‘+3’ Studentship.

These studentships are much sought after as they provide funding for the one year MSc degree and for a further three years on the Law School’s PhD programme. Successful UK-resident applicants have their fees covered and also receive an annual stipend of £13,290 (2010/2011 rates). Successful EU-resident applicants only have their fees covered. Students should check the ESRC website to confirm their eligibility. Candidates who already hold an ESRC-recognized masters degree (or who expect to acquire one in the current academic year) or who have extensive prior research experience may apply for a +3 studentship. This involves direct admission to the School’s PhD programme and offers financial support (on the terms mentioned above) for three years.

We have two ESRC ‘1+3’ or ‘+3’ Quota Studentships to allocate to candidates for entry to the programme in September 2010. We can also put forward one additional application to the ESRC ‘1+3’ (Open) Student Competition.

How to apply for this award

To apply for an ESRC studentship students need to submit a full application to the MSc programme along with a short research proposal (of no more than 2 sides of A4) outlining the intended focus of the PhD. (We accept that these will be preliminary and that the intended focus of the research may change.) Students interested in being considered for an ESRC studentship should contact Alistair Henry (a.henry@ed.ac.uk) as soon as possible to discuss their research proposal and the application process. Candidates for this award must also email pg.law@ed.ac.uk noting that they wish to apply for the '1+3'/’+3’ ESRC competition. The closing date for these applications is Friday 19 March 2010 (the complete application, including transcripts and references, must have been received by the College by this date). Further information on these awards can also be obtained from the ESRC’s own website).
