Overview
Cardiff Business School in conjunction with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water offers a Bursary to support a project-related PhD study in the field of Production Economics, to commence late September 2010.
The project will involve the estimation of relative cost and technical efficiency functions in the water industry. Due to the structure of the water industry as a vertically integrated utility the project will involve analysis of production, network and service efficiency. The aim of the project is to produce a suite of models that can be utilised at a company level to target areas for efficiency improvement and at the industry level to understand the relative operating efficiency of companies. The analysis will utilise both publicly available data and internal company data to model and identify the cost drivers for the company and the industry as a whole. The outcome of the study will be a report which compares the performance, business metrics and asset base of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water with other companies in the sector to help explain some of the differences in operating costs and identify the operating performances of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.
The student will spend at least two months of the year as an intern at Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. On completion of the PhD, the student will be well placed to be employed as a professional economist in the utilities industry.
