Who Are The Vocational Students? The Equality And Diversity Challenge For The Vocational Route In The UK
University of Southampton - School of Education
The University of Southampton's School of Education is recognised as one of the UK's leading centres for educational research. The School has been awarded a University PhD Scholarship for full or part-time entry in October 2010. The scholarship totals £7,000 per annum for each of 3 years, pro-rata for part-time students and is open to UK/EU and international students. One year's funding will be allocated initially with subsequent funding subject to satisfactory progress of the student. The successful student will have the opportunity to benefit from the School's thriving research culture and to contribute to the Lifelong and Work-Related Learning Research Centre.
The scholarship is available for the following project:
Who are the vocational students? The equality and diversity challenge for the vocational route in the UK
Supervisor: Professor Alison Fuller
Over a third of 16-18 year olds are taking vocational courses or apprenticehips. This proportion is likely to rise following the raising of the participation age to 17 in 2013 and 18 in 2015. Little is known about the social characteristics (e.g. gender, ethnic background, social class, disability) of those participating in different kinds and levels of vocational programmes, and the motivations and experiences of vocational learners. The purpose of this project is to generate new knowledge about the demographic and social profile of the population (aged 16-18) pursuing the vocational route and the factors influencing their participation and transitions. The research will involve analysis of quantitative administrative data and qualitative research into young people's decision-making processes and experiences.
