UK: Early Stage Researcher/PhD Training Fellow at University of Aberdeen

Overview

Applications are sought for three Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to be part of a large collaborative team called SAPRO (Sustainable Approaches to Reduce Oomycete (Saprolegnia) Infections in Aquaculture). SAPRO is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network that has been funded by the European Commission (EC) under Framework Program 7. Marie Curie Research Training Networks provide training and research experiences for researchers at the beginning of their careers by giving them the opportunity to spend up to three years in another country as part of an international, high-quality research network. Applicants must meet EC eligibility criteria and must not have lived in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

The oomycete fish pathogen Saprolegnia parasitica is a major problem in the aquaculture industry where it has been estimated that 10% of all hatched salmon and eggs succumb to Saprolegnia infections (Saprolegniosis). SAPRO is integrated into the research activities of European leaders of complementary disciplines, with a research focus towards the development of novel and sustainable measures to control Saprolegniosis and support the aquaculture industry in Europe. The SAPRO network involves eight partner institutions based in the UK, Netherlands, Spain, Norway, Germany and Sweden. Two of the appointed ESRs will register for a PhD under Dr. Pieter van West (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ims/staff/details.php?id=p.vanwest) and one with Prof. Chris Secombes (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/biologicalsci/staff/details/c.secombes). The SAPRO network will provide multidisciplinary training in oomycete molecular biology, genomics, immunology and training in transferable skills. The successful applicants will become integral members of the SAPRO network and the oomycete community (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/oomycetes/Home.html).
