Switzerland: 2 Fully-Funded PHD Studentships in Contemporary English-Language Literatures, University of Geneva

Overview

The English Department of the University of Geneva is seeking to make two appointments for fully-funded PhD studentships in contemporary English-language literatures for a period of five years, starting in August 2010. Applications are especially welcome in the fields of postcolonial literatures, literature and the environment, literary geography, and literature and the body.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will contribute to the Department's first-year teaching and, in addition, will be given the opportunity to teach second and third-year seminars on topics in contemporary English-language literatures. The usual teaching load is no more than two or three hours per week. The successful candidates may also be asked to help with administrative work in the Department.

PhD

The successful candidates will register as a PhD student in Geneva and will be supervised by Dr Martin Leer, Head of the Section of Contemporary Literature, whose research interests and expertise cover the areas mentioned above. Fees at the University of Geneva are minimal: CHF 500 in the first and last semester and CHF 60 for the semesters in-between.

Benefits

The salary starts at CHF 43,637 (ca. £27,000) in the first year and increases on a yearly basis, reaching CHF 72,677 (ca. £45,000) by the last year.

Conditions

Candidates need to have an MA by the time they start work in Geneva. Some knowledge of French may constitute an advantage, and it will be expected that candidates acquire a certain fluency, but a knowledge of French is not indispensable at the outset as all business in the English Department, including all interaction with students, is conducted in English.

Application

Candidates are asked to submit a curriculum vitae, a sample writing passage, a concise PhD project (no more than one page) and the names of one or two referees (no references should be sent at this point).

Geneva

Geneva is an attractive city at the heart of Europe with a distinguished university that brings together students from more than eighty countries. Thanks to Easyjet, Geneva is within easy reach of London and other cities in the UK.

How to apply

Applications should be sent by 27 April 2010 to: Madame Clare Tierque (Clare.Tierque@unige.ch), Département de langue et littérature anglaises, Faculté des lettres, Université de Genève, 5 rue de Candolle, 1211 Genève 4, Switzerland.
