PhD Position in Adjoint-based optimisation for industrial application, Queen Mary, University of London

Overview

Automated numerical shape optimisation for fluid flow is an important aspect in a large range of engineering disciplines such as automotive, aeronautic and turbo-machinery design. The prevalent current practice is to numerically simulate a large number of different designs using a CFD-Solver and to improve the shape manually or by using an ineffective stochastic method. To reduce the computational effort required, one can solve the adjoint to the flow equations, which allows calculating the design sensitivities with only a single CFD and a single adjoint solution. The extensive use of numerical shape optimisation will be essential to design environmentally friendly and competitive industrial products.

Rolls-Royce Plc has developed an in-house CFD and adjoint solver over the past decade. Further work is needed on the adjoint solver to make more of the functionality of the CFD solver also available in the adjoint variant. Extensive use will be made here of Automatic Differentiation tools, in which QMUL has extensive experience. The project will be conducted in close liaison with RR-UK and RR-Germany.
