University of Cambridge - Department Of Materials Science And Metallurgy: Ph.D. Research Studentship

Overview

Supervisor: Professor Harry Bhadeshia

STEEL FOR NUCLEAR POWER GENERATION
Ph.D. Research Studentship (Rolls-Royce/EPSRC) Funded at the ‘home rate' fees level, for students who meet the EPSRC residency criteria

There is a particular class of steel used in the manufacture of large components for portable and fixed nuclear power plant. The steel in service reaches temperatures up to 600 K and is expected to perform for many decades whilst under the influence of stress and irradiation. The aim of this project is to understand using high-resolution experimental techniques, its complex microstructure including carbides, and at the same time to look at the relationship between the structure and start-of-life toughness. To achieve this, the experiments will be founded on calculations of microstructure and properties, particularly fracture behaviour. The work will involve close collaboration with staff at Rolls-Royce Marine and with a manufacturer of large forgings.

The studentship is part of the new Doctoral Training Centre in High Performance Structural Metallics which has been set up in collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc and the Universities of Swansea and Birmingham:

This four year PhD studentship provides full fees and maintenance for students who meet the EPSRC residency criteria (the starting tax free stipend is up to £18,290). EU residents are eligible for a fees-only stipend but a payment of £5k per annum may be available.

The minimum academic requirement for admission is an is an upper second class UK honours degree at the level of MSci, MEng, MPhys, MChem etc, or a lower second with a good Master's, (or overseas equivalents) in a relevant subject.

Applications for admission in October 2010 should be made by 31 July, although there is scope for the chosen candidate to defer admission to January 2011.

For further technical information contact Professor Harry Bhadeshia (hkdb@cam.ac.uk ). Application packs are available via http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/applying/ or from Dr Rosie Ward (remw2@cam.ac.uk ) who is happy to answer questions about the admissions process.
