Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme

Overview

We are pleased to announce the Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme for 2011. Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme was created to support outstanding Doctoral students doing exceptional research in Computer Science or closely related areas. Fellowships are available to PhD applicants or students at any stage of their research at universities chosen by Google. This is a highly competitive programme. Google will award approximately 15 named fellowships from amongst the following:

•Google Fellowship in Algorithms
•Google Fellowship in Natural Language Processing
•Google Fellowship in Machine Learning
•Google Fellowship in Computer Security
•Google Fellowship in Distributed Computing
•Google Fellowship in Programming Technology
•Google Fellowship in Machine Translation
•Google Fellowship in Speech Technology
•Google Fellowship in Human Computer Interaction
•Google Fellowship in Cloud Computing
•Google Fellowship in Computer Architecture
•Google Fellowship in Structured Data Analysis
•Google Fellowship in Search and Information Retrieval
•Google Fellowship in Efficient Computing
•Google Fellowship in Mobile Computing
•Google Fellowship in Computer Vision
•Google Fellowship in Social Computing
•Google Fellowship in Computer Networking
•Google Fellowship in Image and Video Retrieval
•Google Fellowship in Multimedia
•Google Fellowship in Green Computing
•Google Fellowship in Web Privacy
•Google Fellowship in Software Engineering

Applications cannot be accepted directly from students. Please contact your Computer Science department to find out if your university is one of the selected universities, or to receive additional information. Universities selected for this programme will be contacted directly by Google.


Fellowship Details
Google will award fellowships covering the research part of the PhD programme for up to three years, and consisting of:

•Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, which varies by country
•EUR 4,000 per year toward conference attendance and travel, or a personal computer
•Google Research Mentor
•Opportunity to apply for a paid internship
•Invitation to Google Fellowship Forum
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be considered for the 2011 Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme, students must meet the following criteria:

•Must be a PhD applicant or student at any stage of research in the areas of expertise represented by the fellowships (Note: The fellowship cannot be used to support the taught component of a PhD programme or any teaching assignments.)
•Must attend or apply for a full-time PhD position at one of the selected universities - students must remain enrolled in the PhD programme or forfeit the fellowship award
•Must be nominated by their department/university
•Cannot be employed by Google (except as an Intern) or be a family member of a Google employee
Google Doctoral Fellows may not hold the Google Fellowship concurrently with another PhD scholarship/fellowship.

Application Process and Requirements
For each student nomination, the university's Computer Science department (or invited department) should please submit:

•Name of fellowship for which the applicant/student is being considered (given that the fellowship areas overlap, we may choose a different fellowship name for your nomination)
•Applicant/student CV
•Official transcripts of previous and current academic records
•Research/dissertation proposal of maximum 6 pages including references
•2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one coming from the thesis advisor)
•Short CV from the proposed supervisor
All application documents must be in English. Each selected university will be invited to submit a maximum of two student nominations for fellowship consideration.

We encourage universities to nominate students from under-represented groups where appropriate.

Nominations and application materials are due no later than 1st February 2011. An online nomination form will be available in early January 2011 for submissions and eligible universities will receive an e-mail once the form may be accessed. Committees of distinguished engineers and researchers from within Google will review all applications. Short-listed students may be invited for an in-person interview following the initial review.

Fellowship recipients will be announced in May 2011.

When do the fellowships start?

The 2011 Google European Doctoral Fellowships should begin in calendar year 2011, although may start later with the agreement of Google. Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution.
