Belgium: IRO Doctoral Scholarships for Developing Countries

As one of its contributions to development co-operation, K.U.Leuven offers each academic year scholarships to deserving students from developing countries to do their PhD in the largest university in Flanders, Belgium.

Also commonly referred to as the IRO scholarships (IRO in Dutch stands for Interfacultaire Raad voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking), this scholarship programme has supported more than sixty Ph.D. graduates over the past five years. After obtaining their doctorates at K.U.Leuven, these Ph.D. holders are now valorising their degrees in their home countries either in university academic research or in various sectors of industry.

Essential to the application for the IRO scholarship and to completing a doctoral programme successfully is the choice of a good doctoral research topic and supervisor. New applicants are now provided two alternatives: either by selecting amongst the faculty research topics offered by the doctoral schools or by submitting their own personal research proposal.

K.U.Leuven, which is situated at about 20 kilometers from Brussels, the capital of both Belgium and Europe, is the oldest university of the Low Countries. As such, it has a long-standing tradition of hospitality towards students and scholars from abroad. At present, almost 4,000 international students (about 10% of the total number of students at K.U.Leuven) have found their home away from home in Leuven.

Faculty Research Topics
Faculty research topics for the IRO scholarships are proposed by the three doctoral schools:

Humanities and Social Sciences
Science, Engineering and Technology (Arenberg doctoral school)
Biomedical Sciences

The mission of these doctoral schools is

• to organize the international recruitment and placement of doctoral students.
• to organize a doctoral training programme by which doctoral students develop their personal and academic skills, broaden their horizon and to interact with top-level scientists while discussing and conducting cutting edge research.
• to promote the career perspectives of doctoral students through the training they provide, and also through the networks the schools have with organizations, industries and other universities.

Applicants for the IRO scholarship who do not yet have a particular research topic in mind may select a particular topic that interests them out of the priority research fields. Alternatively, you may also select a topic that is offered in general in the webpages of the doctoral schools. In either case, you will need to include a brief motivation explaining how the topic you chose can be approached and treated in a manner relevant to development co-operation.

The print-out of the research topic and your motivation need to be included in your application file. (New priority research fields for the selection round 2010-2011 will be available by November 2009.)

Research Proposal
Applicants for the IRO scholarships who already have a specific research topic in mind may submit their own, personal research proposal along with their application file, instead of one of the priority research fields.

Your first step is to contact a professor at K.U.Leuven to discuss the opportunities for pursuing doctoral studies with your proposed personal research topic. Within the websites of the three Doctoral Schools, namely "Humanities and Social Sciences", "Science, Engineering and Technology (Arenberg doctoral school)" and "Biomedical Sciences", you can find out which K.U.Leuven professors do research on which topics. Alternatively, you may also visit the webpages of the faculties or departments in order to get an idea of the faculty members' research interests.

The contact information for each professor is provided accordingly.

Your next step is then to fill out the following form, indicating the name of the prospective professor-supervisor, the title, outline, tentative bibliography, provisional objectives, methodology and time-frame of your research. The form simply provides the basic structure of the proposal. The proposal itself may, of course, be longer than the two pages provided. Lastly, the prospective supervisor has to endorse your proposal by appending his or her signature.
Applicants for the IRO scholarship who are already enrolled in a doctoral programme at K.U.Leuven will only need to prepare a detailed progress report of their research, instead of a research proposal. The report must also be signed by the student’s supervisor.

Selection procedures

November 30, 2009: application deadline
December 2009 to January 2010: All complete applications are submitted to the faculties concerned for assessment and ranking.
February 2010: The five top-ranking applications from each faculty are further evaluated and scored by the K.U.Leuven Research Council.
mid-March 2010: The final selection of new scholarship students is undertaken by the Interfaculty Council for Development Co-operation and sent to the K.U.Leuven Board of Management for final approval. This selection is very severe and each year only around 15 new scholarships can be granted.
end-March 2010: The International Office of K.U.Leuven will prepare and send the official admission letters and scholarship attestations to the selected candidates.
April to August 2010: Selected candidates apply for their Belgian student visas and prepare for their travel to Leuven.
Early September 2010: Arrival in Leuven

Ireland: SFI-Funded Cancer Research PhD Positions – National University Ireland Galway

PhD Position Available For MSc Or BSc Students In Biology Related Field At NUI Galway – Ireland 2009

Position Description:
A PhD position is available in the group of Dr. Eva Szegezdi in the Department of Biochemistry in NUI, Galway to develop a novel ratiometric approach to identify decisive molecular interactions and thus predict tumour behaviour.

Position Background:
Despite the availability of genomics and proteomics and intensive investigation, the ability to predict tumour response to treatments remains limited. Our proteomic analysis of the apoptotic pathway induced by the cytokine and novel anticancer agent, TRAIL, revealed that the expression level of individual proteins only loosely correlates with TRAIL-sensitivity of tumours. On the other hand, expression ratio of various proteins showed strong correlation with TRAIL-sensitivity. The aim of this project is to assess the predictive power of a ratiometric analysis of proteomes and genomes of tumour cell behaviour. With this ratiometric analysis, ratio-fingerprints can be generated to reveal hidden gene/protein interactions and enable us to explain so far unexplainable phenotypes and cellular responses and remove barriers in our understanding of tumour behaviour.

The project provides training in protein and gene expression profiling, quantitative mass spectrometry, mathematical analytical methods of proteomes as well as transcriptomes. The PhD student will have the opportunity to learn cell biology techniques, such as flow cytometry, gene overexpression and silencing and will work closely with a team of cancer biologists. This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland under the Starting Investigator Research Grant Programme with partners at the Centre of Genetic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain.

Position Requirements:
Candidates should have a MSc. or BSc. degree with a minimum of higher second class honours in biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related discipline and a strong motivation for research in the area of cancer biology.

UK: Research Project, Soil Science / Geography, Graduate Studentships Bedfordshire

Impact of compost application to arable soils on Nitrous Oxide (N20) emissions

Supported by the EPSRC, The Chadacre Agricultural Trust and The Morley Agricultural Foundation, a studentship up to £13,000 p.a. for 4 years plus fees* is available

Cranfield University is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake this exciting research project. The aim of the project is to investigate the difference in emissions of nitrous oxide (N20) associated with application of compost and manufactured fertilisers and elucidating the mechanisms that influence this process.

Nitrous oxide (N20) is a potent greenhouse gas which causes significant impact to the environment. N20 release is associated with agricultural activities as it is linked with application of manufactured fertilisers, livestock manures and crop residue. Compost and manufactured fertilisers differ in the way the nutrients are released into the soil. The nutrient release from manufactured fertilisers is generally more rapid than compost which is also related to easier loss via N20 emission.

The successful candidate will be involved in experimental setup on sites in Nottinghamshire and Norfolk that have received repeated application of green waste compost. N20 emission measurements will be taken at these two sites using the static chamber technique. In-situ measurement of nitrate, phosphate and potassium will be carried out using Teflon suction cup samplers.

The dynamics of nitrate are closely associated with release of N20 in addition to soil moisture, temperature, texture and organic matter. The proposed work will aim to determine potential build up of nutrient reservoirs in these sites and link it with reduction in N20 emissions. The build up of nutrients also associated with increase in organic matter will reduce the reliance of farmers on manufactured fertilisers, in the long run. The increase in organic matter will improve soil workability which will result in reduction in fuel cost for tillage. The applied compost will be used to the best advantage of farmers in terms of nutrient source, improved yield, increase in water holding capacity, improved soil workability whilst minimising environmental harm with a low nitrous oxide emission.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants should have at least a 2:1 UK honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such as soil science, chemistry, biology or geography. Some experience in modelling N20 dynamics would be desirable.

Funding
*Supported by the EPSRC, The Chadacre Agricultural Trust and The Morley Agricultural Foundation this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £13,000 p.a. for four plus fees* years dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Germany: Postdoctoral DAAD Scholarships, RWTHAachen University 2009

DAAD Scholarships For Dcotorate Students At RWTHAachen University – Germany 2009

Scholarship Description:
If you wish to carry out a PhD project at RWTH Aachen University, you will have to find a supervisor (Doktorvater or Doktormutter) who acts as a mentor for your project. As the International Office will not be able to assist you in finding a supervisor, we recommend that you search the RWTH websites in order to find relevant faculties and institutes in order to contact professors who might be suitable as a supervisor. It is important that you find out which specialisations are offered by the faculties and institutes to decide whether they are relevant for you.

About University:

RWTH Aachen University is one of the Institutions of Higher Education in Germany which is entitled to award doctoral degrees. The doctorate mainly consists of a research project which usually does not include taking lectures. PhD projects can be conducted in any field of study at RWTH Aachen University. The subject area chosen by the doctoral candidate is usually part of a greater context and – in the case of applied research – of relevance to industry.

RWTH Aachen University offers only very few of the so-called “structured PhD programmes”. More usually doctoral candidates pursue an independent research project under the supervision of and in close co-operation with a professor (the “Doktorvater” or “Doktormutter”). Candidates are not always enrolled as students, as they also may be employed in a full or part-time position at the university. Their primary task is to conduct a research project which will be a substantial contribution to learning in their field of study. Upon completion of the project, candidates publish the results in form of a dissertation (Doktorarbeit) which is submitted to the faculty. After acceptance of the dissertation, the candidate will have to sit an oral exam. The duration of the entire process can take up from three to five years.

Position Availability:
Holders of scholarships by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or other national and international organisations are usually not employed at RWTH Aachen University during their doctorate, they are enrolled as postgraduate students.

Position Requirements:

-First, according to regulations of RWTH Aachen University, as a formal requirement, international graduates must have a first degree equivalent to a German university degree in order to be admitted to doctoral studies at RWTH (Master’s or equivalent). Division 2.1 of the International Office will evaluate your degree and decide whether it can be considered equivalent to a German university degree. If the degree is not fully recognized, students have the opportunity to take selected classes and sit exams related to their field of research in order to be admitted to doctoral studies at a later stage.

-Second, an RWTH professor must issue a written confirmation that he or she is willing to accept the candidate in his or her research team. A candidate may only apply for doctoral studies at RWTH Aachen University upon finding a supervising professor.

France: The Eiffel Scholarships For International & Home Students By Science Po

The Eiffel scholarship programme, launched in January 1999 by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, is aimed at foreign students whose outstanding ability has been recognised by French institutions of higher education who then wish to host these students for the rest of their studies. The programme is primarily designed to provide education in France for future decision makers in both the private sector and in the national administrations of emerging countries.

Scholarship Eligibility:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives priority to candidates from emerging countries and above all to those who are underrepresented in French universities and higher education institutions: Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and new members of the EU and the Middle East.

Applications received from students currently studying abroad are prioritised over those from students already living in France.

Students are unable to apply directly for the Eiffel Scholarship. Applications
must be made through a higher education institution. If you are studying in two
higher education institutions, you can only submit a single application. In
order to apply, you already need to have been offered a place at Sciences Po.
For your application to be successful, it is therefore essential that you
respect our deadlines.

Sciences Po only proposes those candidates whose profiles match the priorities of the Eiffel scholarship. If you are offered a place to study at

Sciences Po, we will inform you whether your application will be sent on to Egide (the organisation in charge of this scholarship).

Candidates must be under 30 years of age.

Candidates wishing to go on to teach or carry out research are not eligible for this scholarship, as other funding programmes are open to them.

Students who already receive a grant or scholarship from the French government may not apply.

Students who have previously applied for an Eiffel scholarship and who have been unsuccessful may not re-apply, even if they change their field of studies.

Scholarship Value:
The monthly grant is €1181.
The Eiffel Scholarship does not cover tuition fees. Students offered a place to study at Sciences Po who receive the scholarship are therefore responsible for paying the annual tuition fees.

Scholarship Duration:
The Eiffel Scholarship is awarded for the period necessary to complete the course to which students have applied. This is subject to students fulfilling the academic obligations during each year of the course.

Closing Date: November 24, 2009.

Scholarship Applications:
Students who wish to be proposed for the scholarship by Sciences Po after having been offered a place must send the Eiffel Scholarship application form with their application to Sciences Po. It is the candidates’ responsibility to complete the first three pages of the application and to provide the necessary documentation. Incomplete applications will not be processed (and will therefore not be forwarded on to Egide).

The deadline for applications set by Sciences Po, November 24, 2009, is not the date on which applications must be received by Egide. This is because it is necessary to have been offered a place at Sciences Po in order to be eligible for the Eiffel Scholarship. Applications received after this date will not be processed.

Netherlands: PhD Position on Motion in Vacuum by Elastic Mechanisms and Tribology (MOV-ET), University of Twente

09/088 – PhD for a project entitled: MOV-ET: Motion in Vacuum by Elastic mechanisms and Tribology

In High Tech Systems Industries, mechatronical devices for accurate and reliable positioning in vacuum become increasingly important. Movement in vacuum required specific solutions for the moving parts. The usage of lubricants is often not desired for reasons of reliability and pollution of optical components in the vacuum. Therefore other solutions are required. Two options are:
1.Non-contaminating systems like elastic mechanisms
2.Systems with controllable friction and wear.

Elastic mechanisms are researched by
1.a PhD student in the Mechanical Automation Group and Systems and
2.solutions with controllable friction and wear by a PhD student in the Surface Technology and Tribology Group.

Position 2) is the open PhD position.

Because friction in systems is not constant in space and time, accurate positioning and movement of sliding systems is difficult. This unpredictable behaviour is an important reason that limits the development of systems which are required for products with high accuracy (sub-micron). More specific, static friction is one of the reasons that systems cannot be positioned accurately. Further, the fact that friction is not constant, combined with the stiffness and damping properties of the system, can result in friction inducted vibrations (stick-slip). Another aspect is that wear causes surface changes in the track. This also affects the stability of the frictional behaviour in time and because of this also the positioning accuracy.

In the research, the friction and wear behaviour will be studied using a special setup operating in vacuum. It is anticipated that also PEEM (Photoemission Electron Microscopy) will play a role to analyse the wear track. The research is partially experimental in nature using modern analysis equipment. Besides this, design of (parts) of the experimental setup as well modelling aspects will be a part of the work.

The research is a first step into the development of smart surfaces using active piezo layers with the aim to modify the topography of a surface by external signals.

Partners in this project are DEMCON, ASML, FEI, TNO Science and Industry, Philips Applied Technologies, Vision Dynamics and the Research group of Mechanical Automation of the faculty of Engineering Technology.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and fluently English speaking researcher with an MSc degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics or equivalent, with adequate experimental and theoretical skills and affinity with tribology and vacuum systems.

We are looking for candidates with good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment.

Offer

We offer a scientific education on a multidisciplinary subject. The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Your starting salary will be € 2042, – in the first year and will lead up to € 2612, – gross per month in the last year.
