Benjamin A.Gilman International Scholarships Program Available For U.S. Citizen Undergraduates To Study Abroad – USA 2009

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, this congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.
Scholarship Eligibility:
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:
The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
The applicant is studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 28 consecutive days.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is piloting a special summer award cycle for students participating in summer 2010 study abroad programs. To be eligible applicants must meet all of the criteria listed above and must be majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field. This pilot cycle for summer 2010 is only open to students in the STEM fields who meet the criteria listed above.

There are four components to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Application:
1. Online student section.
2. Online study abroad advisor certification.
3. Online financial aid advisor certification.
4. Three paper copies of the student’s transcript/s.
All four components must be completed by the deadlines below in order for your application to be accepted. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered and extensions cannot be granted.
