Infectious Disease Modeler Postdoctoral Positions – University Of Antwerp, Belgium

Postdoctoral Position Description:

Applications for a postdoctoral position at the University of Antwerp are welcomed from persons who have a post-doctoral degree in physics, mathematics, biology, engineering or chemistry, and who have experience in mathematical modeling. The succesful applicant will join a group of researchers working on human infectious diseases, population dynamics, biostatistics, health economics and vaccinology in the framework of a project entitled “Infectious disease models: wildlife ecology, ecological disturbance and transmission to humans.”.

This project is a collaboration with the UA’s Evolutionary Ecology Group of the B iology department. Changing environmental conditions (e.g. climate) are likely to affect the ecology of infections, through changes in the abundance of susceptible natural host populations or by affecting transmission rates (directly or through vectors). The project investigates these effects, through observations, experiments and mathematical modeling, for five model infections elected for their different characteristics (hantaviruses in voles, plague in gerbils, arenavirus in African mice, dengue fever in humans, rotaviruses in vaccinated humans).

The applicant will also become involved in other ongoing research projects in the group.
Position Required Eligibility:

-A higher degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry or engineering.
-Evidence of successful experience in mathematical modeling of dynamic systems.
-Evidence of research achievement through publication in refereed journals.
-A demonstrated ability and desire to communicate and collaborate with scientists working in fields outside of the mathematical sciences.
-Good knowledge of English, both oral and written

Desirable Aptitude:

-Experience in one or more of the following subjects: mathematical epidemiology, simulation studies, (bio)statistics, population ecology, wildlife disease ecology, health economics.
-Ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D.-students
-Ability to attract research funds.
-Good knowledge of Dutch and/or French

Position Benefits:

A position for four years, with an evaluation after the first year. It can be taken up immediately, preferably from October 2009, but timing can be discussed.

A challenging and rewarding research fellowship in a dynamic and interdisciplinary international research environment, where you receive significant freedom to develop your own research interests.

A possibility to involve M.Sc. and Ph.D.-students in your work and supervise them
A stimulating international collaborative network, with opportunities for study visits abroad
Access to unique data sets

Position Application:
