Overview
The focus of this Masters programme is on engineering solutions to transport issues, particularly how the design of systems determines the nature of how people and goods are transported. It is particularly suited to those who wish to extend their engineering capabilities, having studied a civil engineering or a related subject at undergraduate level.
During the programme, students learn how to use engineering to meet the challenges of integrating different modes of transport and make travel safer, greener and more efficient. Students are first equipped with core technical skills in data collection, modelling, planning and engineering design. They then select from a range of optional modules, all of which have practical applications.
Accreditation
The programme is recognised by the major professional bodies in the transport sector. It is approved as further learning for holders of accredited degrees seeking Chartered Engineer (CEng) status via the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT). It also fulfills the educational requirements for membership of Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT UK).
Careers
The transport sector continues to need people with the right skills and training, who are in constant demand. Students progress from ITS to a range of professional-level jobs including those in consultancy, government, operators, non-for-profit and international agencies. ITS facilitates this by arranging interviews for students with prospective employers.
Duration
The programme is available for full-time study (12 months) or for part-time study (flexible attendance but typically 2-3 years duration). Shorter Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programmes are also available.
Eligible Candidates
Applicants should have a good honours degree in engineering or a related discipline.
It is not a requirement to have studied transport at undergraduate level, but applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear interest. International students are encouraged to apply, subject to competence in English language (IETLS 6.5 or equivalent).
Funding
ITS can advise on funding including the process by which candidates can be nominated by ITS for scholarship competitions. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must first hold an unconditional offer of a place on the programme.
