USA: AISES Google Scholarship for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian AISES members

Overview

The AISES Google Scholarship will fund scholarships awards to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian AISES members pursuing degrees in the computer science, computer engineering and related programming fields. AISES and Google support the advancement of American Indian and Alaska Native students working towards obtaining a degree in the fields computer science and technology so they can obtain the necessary skills to compete in today’s global society.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA - Applicants MUST meet all of the following criteria:

1. Must have a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA).
2. Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited four-year college or in their second year at a two-year college leading to a four-year degree. Students at a two-year college must demonstrate a transition plan to a four-year college/university.
3. Majoring in one of the following college disciplines at a accredited 4-year college or university:

- Computer Science
- Computer Engineering

*Other majors will be considered if the applicant demonstrates a strong academic course of study that includes a high volume of computer science courses and/or computer science related research.

AWARDS: $10,000 total award per scholarship recipient


4. Must be a member of an American Indian tribe, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian or otherwise considered to be an American Indian by the tribe with which affiliation is claimed; or is at least 1/4 American Indian blood; or is at least
1/4 Alaskan Native; or considered to be an Alaskan Native by an Alaskan Native group to which affiliation is claimed.

5. Must be a member of AISES. To obtain an AISES membership go to http://www.aises.org/membership/

Notification of scholarship awards are made in September and fall disbursements are made no later than November 1. Spring disbursement of the award will be given out dependent upon maintenance of a 3.5 or higher grade point average (GPA) and official verification of a full-time course load.

AISES Google Scholarship award recipients will be invited to attend the Google Scholars Retreat at Google headquarters the spring following their selection as a scholar. Google will provide scholars with information regarding Google internships and notify students of Google student program opportunities.

The following documents are required under the general guidelines of the AISES Scholarship Program:

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT: The applicant’s most recent Official transcript(s) are required. Faxed photocopies and computer printouts by applicant will not be accepted. Transcripts must reflect spring 2010 final grades.

PERSONAL ESSAY: On a separate sheet(s), the applicant must provide a personal statement with no more than 500 words. This statement is evaluated by stating educational and/or career goals, stating interest in and motivation to attain a higher education in the computer science field, understanding the importance of college and a commitment to completion, expressing commitment to learning and giving back to the community. The personal essay must be included with this application, typed using a 12-point font, and double-spaced. The applicant's name and date must appear at the top of the sheet. Stapled and double-sided written essays will NOT be accepted.

TRIBAL ENROLLMENT: Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or proof of tribal enrollment document is required.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Please submit TWO letters of recommendation. We suggest a professor or advisor from school, and/or a non-related adult friend at work or in your community who knows you well.

ONLINE RESUME: All AISES Scholarship applicants are required to submit their resume with their application in order for their application to be considered. Awardees will be required to upload their resume to the AISES Online Resume Database. Directions to upload resume will be listed on scholarship award agreement.

In order for your application to be considered, it must be filled out completely and all required documents must be submitted.
