USA: For Citizens of Uganda - 2011 Fulbright Science and Technology Award for PhD Position

Overview

The U.S Embassy is pleased to announce the 2011 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding international students. This program will award grants to outstanding PhD candidates to pursue doctoral study at leading U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. Approximately 45 awards will be awarded worldwide to candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.

Eligibility Requirements

Successful applicants for the Fulbright International Science & Technology Program must meet all of the following criteria:

- Be citizens of Uganda;
- Have completed an undergraduate degree before August 1, 2011;
- Be fluent in English;
- Have outstanding academic records, references and preparation in their chosen field,
- Have satisfactory required test scores (GRE, TOEFL, etc.); and
- Have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program within a
specific time-frame and returning home immediately after the approved program.
- Applications must detail the applicant’s specific area of intended academic emphasis
within the broader discipline
- Applicants must detail their intended research area and be prepared to submit a writing sample

Eligible Fields include: Aeronautics and Astronomics/Aeronautical Engineering, Agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only), Astronomy/Planetary Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Sciences/Engineering, Energy, Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), Environmental Science/Engineering, Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Information Sciences and Systems (engineering focus only), Materials Science/Engineering, Mathematics, Neurosciences, Oceanography, Public Health (theoretical research focus only) and Physics. Application/Selection Process

Applications must be submitted on the online application form no later than March 26, 2010. All applications must be submitted using the on-line application forms that can be found on https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international . Copies of certificates and transcripts should be delivered directly to the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy. Only final nominees will be required to take the TOEFL and GRE tests after screening and interviews. We do not require test scores at the initial application stage.

All applications are reviewed by a local selection panel; final nominations are reviewed in the United States by independent review committees. Final selection of awardees is made by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. While applicants can specify where they would like to study in the U.S., ultimate institutional placement for successful candidates will be made by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Selection of principal and alternate nominees will be determined by September 30, 2010. Candidates will be notified by October 15, 2010.

Grant Provisions

The International Fulbright Science & Technology Program provides: tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support and specially tailored enrichment activities. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a PhD.
