Overview
The Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange, in partnership with the State Department and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, created the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair Award in 2005 on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of Senator J. William Fulbright and the bicentennial of the birth of Alexis de Tocqueville.
Target Candidates
The award, open to American university professors with a prominent record of scholarly accomplishment, aims to reinforce collaborative research between the United States and France in all fields of study concerning Franco-American relations. Grantees are invited as guest lecturers and researchers at a host French university, where they have the opportunity to meet with French colleagues, organize and participate in conferences, and interact with French graduate and doctoral students in their area of expertise.
Two awards, one for each semester, will be attributed for the 2011-2012 academic year. Starting in 2010, the application for the chair position will be sent jointly (and thus no longer successively) by the American professor and the French host institution. Consequently, the two parties must have already established contact and planned an agreed-upon academic program.
