Overview
The Institute of Geomatics is a non-profit public consortium of the autonomous Government of Catalonia (GC) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). It was created by law of the GC in 1997 and its mission is to promote and develop geomatics, through applied research and education, for the general benefit of society. The Institute of Geomatics is organized along modern academic management principles. It integrates a friendly and motivating research atmosphere together with scientific, technical and administrative rigor. We practice the knowledge triangle of research, innovation and education. We measure our performance. We trust and respect people.
The 3D Geo-Visualization and Modeling (3D-GVM)
The 3D Geo-Visualization and Modeling IG research unit has the central goal to investigate the potential of 3D visualization and interaction to improve communication, analysis and interaction with geospatial and spatio-temporal data.
Terms of reference for the unit:
•Assimilation and interpretation of geodata into 3D models (including GIS, LIDAR and photogrammetric data) •Modelling, management and analysis of 3D geospatial and spatio-temporal data (e.g. 3D city models, environment models, urban simulation) •3D geovisualization, novel 3D visualization techniques, 3D generalization and multi-scale representation, mixed and augmented reality visualization •Interaction techniques for geo-spatial data, e.g. tangible interaction, multi-touch interaction, mobile interaction
Topics for the PhD project
The definitive PhD project will be defined according to the selected candidate’s profile and the complementary ongoing research activities. It will be related to one or several of the following general topics:
•Augmented Reality (AR) – development and evaluation of AR visualization techniques for geoinformation •Multi-user interaction techniques – development and evaluation of interaction techniques for handling 3D geodata •Algorithms for data fusion, analysis and abstraction – development of algorithms and datastructure to integrate streams of geoinformation provided by sensors like LIDAR scanners, sensor-networks etc.
Candidate profile
•Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, GIS or equivalent background that qualifies the candidate for the specific functions and activities described above. •Strong motivation for research activities and the intent to pursue a PhD. •Fluent verbal and written communication in English. •Proactive personality. Interest to conduct research in an interdisciplinary international team. Willingness to present research results in leading international conferences. •Previous academic or work experience in geomatics is an asset. •Very good knowledge in C, C++ or Java.
Conditions of the fellowship
•The general conditions and norms for the IG pre-doctoral fellowship program apply to all aspects of the present call and its implementation. •The fellowship is offered for a period of one year, and it is renewable up to a total of four years. •In order to renew yearly the fellowship the PhD fellow has to demonstrate an adequate progress of his/her academic and research activities. •See http://www.ideg.es/page.php?id=555 for more details. •The IG will evaluate possibilities to win external funding for the fellowship and might condition the grant to winning such funding.
Applications
Applications shall contain:
•a cover letter (including the description of the motivation to pursue a PhD in Geomatics), •a detailed candidate’s CV (including a full contact address and e-mail), •scanned copies of passport and university degree, •a supporting reference letter. Questions regarding the position can be directed at Prof. Volker Paelke volker.paelke@ideg.es .
The required documentation shall be sent to cv@ideg.es or the address indicated below.
INDICATE REFERENCE 3D-2010-10-29 –PHD-FS in all communication.
Deadline for the presentation of applications is 28/11/2010.
