Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Science, Technology and Culture

Overview

Applications are invited for a 2,5 year postdoctoral research fellowship (SKO 1352) within the science, technology and culture group at the Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (TIK). For more information please see http://www.tik.uio.no/english/. The position will be part of a joint research project between TIK and SIFO (Norwegian institute for consumer research) which will explore the uses of Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) in society. In addition, the project aims to develop perspectives and methodologies for analyzing this new and emerging technology.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have both the ability to contribute to empirical studies and have a strong theoretical competence in science and technology studies (STS). The post-doc project should be closely linked to the overall research project (RFID, see below). The successful candidate must have experience from interdisciplinary research and must also be able to conduct research in a collaborative research environment.

TIK’s research is organized within and across two main areas: 1) Science, technology and culture and 2) Innovation studies. Although the successful applicant will be part of research group 1, a combination of competence from both research areas is welcomed.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualifications and Personal Skills

Applications should include a project proposal (2 – 5 pages) clearly referring to the overall research project (RFID). A description of the overarching research project is available at http://www.sifo.no/digimedia/Pages/RFIDinSociety.html

It is a requirement that the applicant completes his or her project within the period of appointment. The candidate must be able to work with both Norwegian and English materials and literature.

Scientific production and international publishing beyond the PhD degree is an advantage but not a precondition for obtaining the fellowship. Only candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date may apply for the position. (A prerequisite for taking up the position is the successful completion of a doctoral degree.)

Ten percent of the position is reserved for tasks other than research, such as teaching courses and supervising students at MA level. Relevant experience with such tasks will therefore be an advantage.

The ability to cooperate within research networks is an important criteria in the evaluation of the applicants. In accordance with the usual academic norms, particular emphasis will be placed upon formal qualifications, the PhD thesis, other scientific publications and the actual project proposal.

In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed upon the quality of the project description and the academic and personal ability of the candidate to complete the project within the given timeframe. Interviews with potential candidates will be held.

We offer

•Pay grade 57-64 (NOK 448.400 - 510.200), depending on level of competence/length of service
•Academically stimulating working environment
•Good pension benefits under the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund scheme
•Good welfare benefits
The application must include:

•Application letter
•Project proposal (2-5 pages)
•CV (summarizing education, former positions, pedagogic experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
•Copies of educational certificates, letters of recommendation and references
•A complete list of publications and that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
