Overview
The Graduate Studies in International Affairs (GSIA) program in the Department of International Relations, School of International, Political and Strategic Studies, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, is Australia's leading provider of graduate education in International Relations. Established by Professor Hedley Bull more than 35 years ago, the GSIA program has built an outstanding reputation as an internationally renowned program for the study of global affairs within an Asia-Pacific context.
The successful applicant will be instrumental in shaping and leading the GSIA program. S/he will teach into the program's courses, and contribute to the supervision of Masters and PhD students This person will play an integral role in managing the development and administration of the program through a three-year term as Director (after which the post will be expected to rotate to another member of the department). As this is a continuing appointment, the successful applicant will occupy a standard academic position within the Department following her/his completion of the Director of Studies term.
We are seeking candidates with research interests that will complement the expertise of current Departmental staff, and whose research will contribute to our understanding of the interaction of global and regional forces in the Asia-Pacific region.
Salary Package Level B-D ($77,455 - $123,074) plus 17% superannuation
KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:
The appointee will work with Department, School, College and university colleagues to deliver key strategic outcomes in education and research. S/he will be expected to demonstrate continued excellence in published research and graduate teaching. Effective leadership for the development and administration of the Department's GSIA Program will also be a key outcome, as well as active contribution to the School's intellectual and administrative communities. This position is responsible to the Head of the Department of International Relations who in turn is responsible to the Director, School of International, Political and Strategic Studies.

Its students come not just from Australia but from around the world, and they go on to occupy significant roles in government, international organizations, NGOs, and academia. Through its public lectures series, plus the links with government departments, embassies, companies, and international organizations, the Department plays a major role in the University's outreach activities.
Role Statement:
1. Provide leadership to the management, promotion and development of the graduate coursework programs of the Department of International Relations.
2. Publish research of internationally recognised quality.
3. Make a significant contribution to coursework teaching in the GSIA Program.
4. Supervise PhD and masters students.
5. Conduct other duties as consistent with the classification of the position.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
LEVEL B: Research Fellow
1. PhD or equivalent in political science with an emphasis on international relations.
2. Strong record of published research in international relations.
3. Outstanding teaching record in international relations.
4. Demonstrated capacity to give leadership to the management and development of a large graduate teaching program.
5. Record of successful supervision of graduate students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
6. Potential to attract external funding for research projects and a potential capacity to develop and engage in collaborative research projects.
7. Capacity to establish and maintain effective relations with colleagues and staff within the School and University.
8. A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.
LEVEL C: Fellow
1. PhD or equivalent in political science with an emphasis on international relations.
2. A publishing record that establishes the candidate as an emerging leader in her or his specialised research area.
3. Outstanding teaching record in international relations.
4. Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing and developing a large graduate teaching program.
5. Record of successful supervision of graduate students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
6. Success in attracting external funding for research projects and a proven track record in developing and engaging in collaborative research projects.
7. Capacity to establish and maintain effective relations with colleagues and staff within the School and University.
8. A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.
LEVEL D: Senior Fellow
1. PhD or equivalent in political science with an emphasis on international relations.
2. A publishing record that demonstrates the candidate as internationally recognised in her or his specialised research area.
3. Outstanding teaching record in international relations.
4. Extensive demonstrated experience and leadership in managing and developing a large graduate teaching program.
5. Substantial record of successful supervision of graduate students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
6. Substantial success in attracting external funding for research projects and a proven track record in developing and engaging in collaborative research projects.
7. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective relations with staff within the School, University and externally.
8. Demonstrated leadership qualities and management, administrative and communication skills, appropriate to a University setting.
9. A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.
