Overview
The Division of Economics in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton is pleased to advertise 2 ESRC studentships for postgraduate study, covering full tuition and monthly maintenance stipend for MSc + PhD (1+3 years) or PhD only (3 years) studies in Economics at the University. 1+3 awards involve one year MSc training (MSc Economics or MSc Economics and Econometrics) followed by 3 years doctoral training, while the +3 awards involve direct entry into the doctoral programme for students already holding a good Masters degree. Full awards (tuition and maintenance) are available to either UK or EU nationals who will have resided in the UK for the three years preceding the start of the award (including for study).
Applicants from EU countries who do not satisfy the ESRC residency requirements may only be offered the tuition portion of the awards.Economics at Southampton is a young group which prides itself on its vibrant and collegial environment, within which it carries out rigorous research with international impact. According to the latest research assessment exercise (RAE 2008) 80% of our submitted research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, putting us in the top 10 of UK economics departments. There are three main research groups in our Division spanning a very wide range of theoretical and applied topics: Information economics, Productivity Policy and Macroeconomic Performance and Econometric Methods. We are particularly interested in supervising research that falls in any of the above broad areas.
What the studentships pay
The ESRC studentships pay all University tuition fees, plus an annual maintenance stipend (set at £13,290 for the 2009-10 academic year). In addition, Economics can potentially qualify for an additional maintenance stipend of £3,000 per year for award-holders whose study or research involves advanced quantitative methods. Finally, each studentship includes a Research Support Grant of £750 per year for each of the three years of MPhil/PhD study.
Eligible Candidates
To be eligible for these awards you must meet the ESRC's residence requirements. Details of these can be found in the ESRC guidance notes on the Social Sciences website. Candidates for a '1+3' award must possess an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent. Candidates applying for a '+3' award must have successfully completed the equivalent of an ESRC-recognised Research Training masters course.
