Overview
Topic: NS network simulation on hybrid wired wireless network
Department Networking Lab, Thomson Corporate Research
Selection Period; early Q1 2010
Date of hiring; Q1 2010
Length 18 months
Content
Thomson company focus is related to the creation, management and delivery of multimedia content, especially video. It is ranked among the very first ones on STB and Gateway products worldwide, and has a major position in content creation under the name of Technicolor. Thomson Corporate Research employs several international teams through multi-site projects between Rennes France, Princeton US and Beijing China, in charge of proposing concrete solutions to be typically deployed within 5 years or so. In this frame, the networking lab of Corporate Research based near Rennes, France, is looking for a postdoctoral candidate able to work on applied researches related to hybrid wired and wireless small scale networking.
The PhD, fluent in English, should have been graduated for a thesis work in the field of communication network and based on network simulation. The practical knowledge of an event simulator tool of NS type is mandatory, including strong coding practice in C/C++. The knowledge of NS3 would be a real plus.
The PhD will join a work in progress and be led by a senior researcher, targeting a complete simulation set-up of a small scale hybrid network. The simulation will be focused at the MAC level, especially 802.11n wireless, but extended investigations should be possible.
The candidate should be aware that the first part of the work will be devoted to the development of new advanced features on a really concrete case. The PhD should then be able to propose and address more advanced topics, should it be in terms of performance, new features or new communication technologies. In any case, the PhD should aim to contribute to one or more publication(s), which would show the feasibility of the proposed solution and highlight the future perspectives.
Technical keywords NS, 802.11n, WiFi Alliance, IP networking, QoS layer 2 and 3, BT, PLC
