UK: Cardiff University President's Research Scholarships in Bioimaging

Overview

Scholarization: Cardiff University is pleased to invite applications for 3 PhD studentships in Bioimaging.

The prestigious Bioimaging President's Research Scholarships are at the interface of the physical and life sciences and fit with the current strategic aims of major funding bodies such as the BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC and Wellcome Trust. At their core is the application of cutting-edge research methodologies and developments in imaging technology to answer pressing problems in biomedicine, with a focus on healthcare and research into aging, just two examples of priority areas in government-funded research which have high potential to impact on society and quality-of-life issues.

Doctoral training activities within Bioimaging are designed to produce the next generation of researchers at the life sciences-physical sciences interface. Graduates will be recruited, educated and trained to develop and apply innovative, cutting-edge imaging modalities across a range of Bioimaging-associated areas to address fundamental and applied questions in the biosciences and healthcare.

The doctoral training programme will build on natural synergies which already exist between researchers in the Schools of Biosciences, Physics and of Optometry & Vision Sciences, and the cross-School research which is currently underway, often supported by major external funds. Students will benefit from a diverse range of expertise and high quality facilities in participating Schools and across the University.

Trained doctoral graduates will be exceptionally well placed to use their acquired scientific and transferable skills in academic or in the high-tech industrial landscape which covers the biotechnology, healthcare and / or pharmaceutical fields in the UK and abroad.

Applications are invited for the following projects this year:

• Physics - Bioimaging: Optical and Scanning probe imaging and manipulation of single colloidal quantum dots
• Biosciences - Bioimaging: Label-free multiphoton microscopy of intracellular lipids using Coherent Antistokes Raman Scattering (CARS)
• Optometry - Bioimaging: Three-dimensional electron tomography of the extracellular matrix of the eye and the role of intraocular pressure
